Class AAA Regional Preview: Fairport and Lancaster to meet for third straight year in Far West Regional

For the third time in as many seasons Fairport and Lancaster will meet in the state quarterfinals. The two sides have split the previous meetings. Saturday will serve as a de facto deciding game in a best-of-three series. Here’s the breakdown:

FAIRPORT RED RAIDERS

How they arrived here: Top-seeded Fairport (No. 1 NYSSWA) automatically advanced to the semifinals thanks to a first-round bye and pulled out a 2-1 victory over No. 4 Rush-Henrietta to advance to the championship. The Red Raiders defeated No. 3 McQuaid Jesuit 4-1 in the finals for the third time in a row to clinch a spot in the regional. No. 1 Lancaster (No. 7 NYSSWA) kicked off the postseason with a 9-nil shutout over No. 4 Niagara Falls in the semifinals. In the Section VI championship, the Legends grabbed a 3-1 victory against No. 3 West Seneca to move on to the Far West Regional.

Total goals scored: Fairport (50), Lancaster (61)

Total goals allowed: Fairport (6), Lancaster (21)

Trends: Fairport rolls into the championship on a 35-game unbeaten streak with the Red Raiders most recent loss coming on Nov. 4th, 2023 when Fairport fell 1-0 to Lancaster in the Far West Regional. In the two years since, Fairport has outscored opponents 102-26. This season the Red Raiders have scored three goals or more on nine different occasions and have not allowed more than one in a game all year. To go along with that, Fairport has recorded 10 shutouts throughout the season with four of its last six victories coming via clean sheets.

Lancaster heads into the state quarterfinal on an eight-game win streak outscoring opponents 46-7 in that stretch. During the win streak, the Legends have scored two or more goals every game and netted five or more on five different occasions. To go along with high scoring, the Legends have not allowed more than two goals in a game and recorded two shutouts since its last loss on Sept. 29, 2025 against Canisius 2-1. On the season, Lancaster has five shutouts and have not allowed more than two goals once. Offensively, the Legends have scored two or more goals 13 times this year.

Last time they met: Fairport defeated Lancaster, 5-3 in the 2024 NYS Class AAA far West Regional.

History 101: Fairport, the reigning state champion, is looking to clinch back-to-back regional titles and the ninth in program history. The Red Raiders are 8-2-0 all-time in state quarterfinals with wins over Lancaster in 2019 (4-0), Clarence in 2016 (1-0/Class AA), Orchard Park (1-0/2014/AA), Clarence (1-0/2013/AA), Clarence (2-1/1998 Class A), Sweet Home (1-0, 1997/A) and Lakeshore (3-0, 1996/A) as well as last year’s victory. NYSPHSAA added Class AAA prior to the 2023 season.

What’s at stake: A spot in the NYS Class AAA semifinals against either Elmira (IV) or Guilderland (II).

Kickoff is scheduled for 5 p.m. on Saturday Nov. 8th at West Seneca West High School.
