Class AA regional preview: Churchville-Chili, Frontier to face off in state quarterfinal

One squad looks to win its first regional matchup since 2003 while the other is coming off its first sectional championship in more than three decades. Churchville-Chili and Frontier will battle in the NYS Class AA Far West Regional. Here’s the breakdown:

CHURCHVILLE-CHILI SAINTS 
(16-3 / Monroe County II)
vs.
FRONTIER FALCONS 
(16-2-1 / ECIC I)

How they arrived here: Churchville-Chili earned the Section V Class AA crown with wins over Gates Chili (1-0), Victor (1-0) and Penfield (2-0) before advancing on penalty kicks (4-2) against Spencerport. Frontier defeated North Tonawanda (2-1), Lockport (2-1) and Clarence (1-0) to win the Section VI championship and earn a spot in the state quarterfinals. 

Total goals scored: Churchville-Chili (47), Frontier (43)

Total goals allowed: Churchville-Chili (18), Frontier (12)

Trends: Churchville-Chili enters on a seven-game unbeaten streak, recording six shutout victories in that span. Frontier has won four games in a row where the Falcons have outscored opposing teams 8-3. 

Players to watch for Churchville-Chili: Elise Faix Fr. F/M (14 G, 6 A); Alexis Olson Sr. F (7 G, 9 A); Jillyan Ewing Sr. F/M (8 G, 5 A); Ava Fedele Jr. F/M (6 G, 3 A); Avery Aloi Sr. D (5 G, 1 A); Shavonne Callahan Sr. Mid/F (3 G. 2A); Hailey Hotaling Jr. D (2 G, 2 A); Madison Mastrodonato Sr. M/D (1 G); Tessa Wood Sr. GK (115 saves, 18 goals against).

Players to watch for Frontier: Reese Downey Sr. (15 G, 4 A); Kennedy Amodeo 8th (12 G, 5 A); Paige Sikorski Sr. (5 G, 4 A); Marissa Tirado So. (2 G, 4 A); Lily Sullivan Fr. (3 G, 1 A); Sophie Cleary Sr. GK (30 saves, 4 goals against).

Coaches: Brooke Elnicky (Churchville-Chili), Ronald Sporyz (Frontier) 

History 101: Churchville-Chili is making its first regional appearance since 2003 when the Saints defeated Williamsville North, 1-0. That was Churchville’s second straight appearance in the state quarterfinals. Frontier last won a sectional title in 1990.

What’s at stake: A spot in the NYS Class AA semifinal against either Warwick (IX) or Horseheads (IV). 

Kickoff is on Friday at 7:30 p.m. located at Spencerport High School.
