Brighton and Webster Schroeder to meet for A1 title

One team is looking for its second straight sectional title. The other enters the championship on a five-game winning streak. Brighton and Webster Schroeder met in the final week of the regular season and will meet again on Friday to decide the Class A1 title. Here’s the breakdown:

No. 4 BRIGHTON BRUINS (7-2/6-2 against Class A1)
vs.

No. 6 WEBSTER SCHROEDER WARRIORS (6-3/6-2 against Class A1)

How they arrived here: Brighton started off its postseason with a 35-14 win over No. 5 seed Churchville-Chili. In the semifinals, the Bruins took down previously undefeated and No. 1 overall seed Irondequoit 7-6. Webster Schroeder went on the road to beat No. 3 seed Hilton 17-0 in the opening round before beating No. 7 seed Victor 21-7 to clinch a spot in the championship game.

Players to watch for Brighton: Ethan Bialaszewski So. QB/DB (65.4% completion percentage, 933 yards, seven touchdowns); Justin Medina Jr. RB/S (769 rushing yards, 13 touchdowns, two interceptions); Zachary Rossignol Jr. FB/LB (480 yards, seven touchdowns, 37 tackles); Matthew Heininger Sr. LB/RB/TE (209 rushing yards, 230 receiving yards, three total touchdowns, 61 tackles); Zahmar Tookes Jr. OL/DL (59 tackles, five tackles for loss)

Webster Schroeder: Kalin Watkins Jr. QB (62.4% completion percentage, 1,679 yards, 15 TDs, 299 rushing yards, nine rushing TDs); Liam Torpey Sr. RB/DB (344 yards, four TDs); AJ Amico Sr. WR/DL (35 catches, 754 yards, seven touchdowns); Robert Kenny Sr. WR/LB (27 catches, 369 yards, two touchdowns); Zachary Kaldas Sr. WR/DB (24 catches, 354 yards, six touchdowns)

Coaches: Stephen Lian (Brighton), Mike Stumpf (Webster Schroeder)

History 101: The two squads met in Week 7 in Webster, and the Warriors came away with a 31-21 victory. Brighton is the defending Section V Class A champion and is playing in its third sectional championship game in a row. Webster Schroeder hasn’t won a sectional title since 2009, and a win on Friday would be the fifth title for the Warriors since 1977.

What’s at stake: A spot in the Section V Class A Regional Qualifier against the winner of the A2 championship between East/World of Inquiry and Brockport.

Kickoff is set for 8:00 pm on Friday night at SUNY Brockport.
