Sectional Championship Preview: Avoca-Prattsburgh and Andover-Whitesville meet for Class D2 title

Two teams searching for program-first championships. Avoca-Prattsburgh and Andover-Whitesville will meet for the first time this season to decide the Section V Boys’ Soccer Class D2 champion on Friday. Here’s the breakdown:

No. 1 seed AVOCA-PRATTSBURGH TITANS
(12-5-1 / Steuben County)

No. 3 seed ANDOVER-WHITESVILLE PANTHERS
(11-7-0 / Allegany County II)

How they arrived here: Top-seeded Avoca-Prattsburgh downed Jasper-Troupsburg (4-0) and Mount Morris (4-0) to reach the Class D2 title game. Andover-Whitesville topped Lima Christian (4-0) and defeated second-seeded Lyndonville (1-0) to reach the title match.

Total goals scored: Avoca-Prattsburgh (38), Andover-Whitesville (47)

Total goals allowed: Avoca-Prattsburgh (17), Andover-Whitesville (32)

Trends: Avoca-Prattsburgh enters the matchup winning four of its last five games. Andover-Whitesville has won four of its last six games.

Last time they met: Andover-Whitesville defeated Avoca-Prattsburgh, 4-2 on October 2nd of 2024.

Players to watch for Avoca-Prattsburgh: Carter Button Jr. MF (13 G, 9 A); Jaeden Crowder Fr. F (8 G, 4 A); Elias Putnam Sr. F (7 G, 1 A); Devin Stamets Fr. M (5 G, 2 A); Zachary Heale Jr. GK (118 saves, 17 goals against).

Andover-Whitesville: Brody Vance Jr. (23 G, 8 A); Colton Calladine Sr. (12 G, 17 A); Isaiah Cole Sr. (4 G, 3 A); Carter Grice Jr. (4 G, 3 A); Gage Putnam Jr. (1 G, 2 A).

Coaches: John Stamets (Avoca-Prattsburgh), Cody Borden (Andover-Whitesville)

History 101: Avoca-Pratsburgh is looking for its first title since the two programs merged for the 2021 season. Avoca won the 2018 Class D championship. Prattsburgh defeated Whitesville for the 1993 Class D championship. Andover-Whitesville is also looking to win a program-first title since the two schools merged. Andover won six titles, the most recent coming in 2015 (Class D2) and Whitesville had two championships including the D2 crown in 2011.

What’s next: A spot in the Class D regional qualifier against either Fillmore or Northstar Christian. After that, it’s the Class D Far West Regional, where Section VI’s Maple Grove is awaiting its opponent.

Kickoff is set for 5 p.m. on Friday at Perry High School.
