Luis Gil, the 2024 American League Rookie of the Year and one of the pillars of the New York Yankees rotation, will make a rehab start for the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders on Wednesday at Innovative Field, sources have told Pickin’ Splinters.
No official confirmation has been made by any of the teams involved, although this is not unusual for players on rehabilitation assignments. ESPN had earlier reported that a rehab start for the 27-year-old Dominican right-hander in AAA was likely.

The 27-year-old Gil, who has missed the entire season after being diagnosed with a high-grade lat strain during spring training, had a breakout year in 2024, his first full season in the majors after cups of coffee in 2021 and 2022. In 29 starts and 151.2 innings, Gil went 15-7 with a 3.50 ERA, striking out 171. After the season, Gil earned the Rookie of the Year award, edging out Baltimore’s Colton Cowser for the honor.
Interestingly, in another world, Gil could have been a Red Wing: He’d originally signed with the Minnesota Twins in 2015, but was traded to the Yankees in 2018 for Jake Cave, who played parts of two seasons for the Wings.
This is the second straight season that the Red Wings have hosted a rehabbing Yankees pitcher. In 2024, the Red Wings defeated Scranton in a game started by Yankees ace Gerrit Cole.
Wednesday’s game is scheduled for 6:05 p.m. Before that, however, the Red Wings host Scranton on Tuesday at 6:45 P.M.
