Pittsford Mendon and Amherst to meet in Class A state quarterfinal

One squad has outscored its opponents by 61 runs over the past six games. The other is in the Far West Regional for the second season in a row. Pittsford Mendon and Amherst (VI) match up for a spot in the NYS Class A semifinals. Here’s the breakdown:

How they got here: After a first round bye, Pittsford Mendon cruised to a 12-2 victory over Batavia in the Section V quarterfinals and followed that up with a 12-1 win against East in the semifinals. In the final, the Vikings picked up a 7-1 win over Eastridge. Amherst defeated Kenmore East (8-2), Grand Island (8-2), and Iroquois (6-4 F/9) to win the Section VI Class A1 title before beating Dunkirk 18-0 in the Section VI Class A regional qualifier. 

Tempo and trends: Pittsford Mendon averages 6.3 runs per game and allows an average of 3.0 runs per game. The Vikings haven’t lost in six games, and are outscoring their opponents 66-5 over that span. Amherst scores an average of 6.0 runs per game while allowing 3.8 runs per game defensively. The Tigers have won 10 of their past 12 games.

Players to watch for Amherst: Tyler Wesolowski Jr. (four hits in Section VI title game); Patty Kantz Sr. (Starting pitcher and collected three hits in title game); Grady Brown Sr. (2-for-4 with home run and two RBI in title game); Evan Beiter Sr. (double, single, and five innings of relief pitching in title game); Adam Sarzynski Jr. (paired two hits with two RBI in title game)

Coaches: Shawn Caveny (Pittsford Mendon), Brian Davis (Amherst)

History 101: Pittsford Mendon is making its first appearance in the Far West Regional since 2001, when the Vikings defeated Williamsville South. This is the second straight season that Amherst has made it to the Far West Regional. 

What’s at stake: A spot in the NYS Class A semifinals against the winner of Rye (I) and La Salle (II)/ Jamesville-Dewitt (III).
