Bloomfield’s Wright and Pittsford Sutherland’s Lyons headline Section V Softball Sectional MVPs

Bloomfield’s Ashlyn Wright and Pittsford Sutherland’s Gabrielle Lyons were two of the eight players to be named Sectional MVPs after their teams won titles this past weekend. 

Wright helped Bloomfield win its second straight championship as the Bombers took down Warsaw. Wright struck out six batters and tossed a one-hitter to win her second straight Class C1 sectional MVP. 

Lyons was named the Class A Sectional MVP after she finished with two triples, two RBI, two scored runs, and a drawn walk as Pittsford Sutherland won 10-5 over Eastridge in the Class A championship game to win its second straight sectional title. Lyons was also named MVP of Class A in 2024.

In Class AAA, Rush-Henrietta’s Kadyn Hartel was named MVP after the Royal Comets won 8-7 over Greece in the sectional title game. Hartel struck out eight batters, picked up a pair of hits, and drove in two runs. It’s the second sectional championship since 2023 for the Royal Comets.

Webster Thomas Titan Olivia Bowers struck out eight batters as the Titans took down cross-town rival Webster Schroeder by a score of 2-1. Bowers was named the Class AA sectional MVP for her efforts in helping Webster Thomas win their second sectional title in three seasons.

The Class B1 MVP was Wellsville’s MaKenna Dunbar. Dunbar struck out 11 batters, doubled, and scored the go-ahead run in the sixth inning as the Lions won 2-1 over Avon to earn their fifth straight sectional title.

In Class B2, Haverling’s Kalli Witherell retired 11 batters via strikes over five two-hit innings to help the Rams defeat Waterloo by a score of 18-0. Witherell was named MVP, and the win gave Haverling’s its first sectional title since 2016. 

Bolivar-Richburg’s Kylee Whiting was the Class C2 sectional MVP. The freshman hurled a complete game shutout with nine strikeouts to help the Wolverines win 4-0 over Oakfield-Alabama to earn their fourth Section V title since 2021.

To round it out, Fillmore’s Morghyn Ross was named the Class D MVP. Ross finished 2-for-2 with a two-run home run and a double, walked twice, and scored three runs as the Eagles defeated Keshequa, 10-5 for the program’s first sectional title. 

The season continues this week with state tournament play. Rush-Henrietta will face Section VI champion Lancaster in the Class AAA regional on Wednesday. A 5:00 p.m. first pitch is scheduled at Frontier High School in Hamburg, New York. Haverling, which topped Wellsville in the state qualifier, will play Fredonia. That game is also scheduled for Wednesday at Frontier High School. A 7:30 start time is scheduled. 

On Friday, Fillmore faces Franklinville in the Class D matchup. A 4 p.m. start is slated. Bloomfield and Chautauqua Lake follow in the Class C game. Bloomfield edged Bolivar-Richburg in the qualifier. 

On Saturday the games shift to Grand Island High School. Pittsford Sutherland faces Williamsville South in the Class A scheduled for a 1:30 p.m. first. Webster Thomas, in the AA game, against Orchard Park will follow at 4:00 p.m.

With wins on Wednesday, Rush-Henrietta and Haverling will also play on Saturday. 

Note: The state has added another round to the tournament for Classes AAA and B. The winners of Wednesday’s games will play the Section VI representative on Saturday. NYSPHSAA brackets can be seen HERE.
