The Rochester Red Wings announced their schedule for the opening week of the International League season on Monday, including details on some of the pre-game festivities at next week’s home opener.
Ryan Corbett, the Dansville native who was detained for 894 days by Afghanistan’s Taliban government before returning home earlier this year, will throw out the ceremonial first pitch ahead of the April 1 home opener. Lucas West, a Fairport native who sang the national anthem before the Buffalo Bills’ postseason win over the Baltimore Ravens earlier this year, will perform the “Star Spangled Banner” again, this time at Innovative Field for the home opener. Gates open at 2:30 p.m. for the 4:05 p.m. first pitch next Tuesday.
However, the Red Wings will see action well before their home opener. The team hosts a workout day and media session on Wednesday before taking part in the 92nd Annual American Legion Rochester Red Wings Welcome Home Dinner on Wednesday night. They’ll then begin their season on Friday down the thruway in Buffalo with a 2:05 p.m. game against the Bisons.
Rochester enters the season coming off a 77-71 season, the team’s first year at .500 or better since 2019. Matt LeCroy returns as manager for the fifth straight season, the most for a Red Wings skipper since the legendary Joe Altobelli in the 1970s.
