Jack Leasure Shooting and Skills Camp Championship Preview: Hornell and Mynderse set to decide Girls’ Class B1 title

One team is looking for its 10th title in program history. The other team is making its fourth straight sectional final appearance and is searching for its third straight title and the fourth in school history. Finger Lakes Community College will host a battle between Hornell and Mynderse for the Section V Class B1 Girls’ Basketball title. Here’s the breakdown:

No. 3 seed HORNELL RED RAIDERS (18-3 / Livingston County Division I)
vs.
No. 8 seed MYNDERSE BLUE DEVILS (11-12 / Finger Lakes East)
Friday, Finger Lakes CC, 7 p.m.

How they arrived here: Hornell topped Livonia 58-38 to open up their tournament and followed that up with a 62-26 win over Penn Yan to advance to the Class B1 final. Mynderse defeated Haverling/Hammondsport (54-40), No. 1 seed Young Women (61-55) and Wellsville (51-50) to get to the Class B1 final.

Scoring offense: Hornell (62.1), Mynderse (41.0)

Scoring defense: Hornell (44.6), Mynderse (44.8)

Trends: Hornell has won four in a row and seven out of its last eight games. Three of those wins have came by at least 30 points. Mynderse is on a three-game win streak.

Players to watch for Hornell: Jordyn Dyring Jr. G (17.2 PPG 3.3 RPG, 2.6 APG, 2.3 SPG); Selena Maldonado Jr. G (12.9 PPG, 6.2 RPG, 4.3 APG, 4.0 SPG); Raegan Evingham So. F (9.8 PPG 7.8 RPG 4.0 SPG. 3.2 APG); Payton Bentley Jr F. (10.3 PPG, 7.8 RPG, 3.6 BPG, 1.2 SPG); Mia Nasca Jr. G (3.3 PPG 3.2 RPG 3.0 APG, 2 SPG); A’Jonay Hawkins Jr. F (2.9 PPG 3.6 RPG).  

Mynderse: Chelsea Korzeniewski Sr. G 10.5 PPG, 2.5 RPG, 4.3 APG; Ali Nigro Sr. F 6.7 PPG, 6.1 RPG, 1.0 APG; Peyton Verkey Jr. G 6.5 PPG, 5.1 RPG, 2.0 APG; Hannah O’Brien Jr. F 5.4 PPG, 6.0 RPG; Reese Markel So. F 3.1 PPG, 4.4 APG

Coaches: Jim Dagon (Hornell), Hannah Brown Trice (Mynderse)

History 101: Hornell, which won its first title in 2023, has made three straight sectional final appearances and is looking for a three-peat. Mynderse is looking for a 10th title in program history and its first since 2015.

What’s at stake: Winner advances to face either Lyons or Marcus Whitman in the Class B regional qualifier.
