The 2025 Section V Ice Hockey Class B final features the defending champion in the big game for the first time in five years. Top-seeded Victor will look to dethrone No. 2 Batavia Notre Dame. Here’s what you need to know:
No. 1 seed VICTOR BLUE DEVILS (16-5-1/MCPSAC Division)

How they arrived here: Victor (No. 5 NYSSWA Division II) opened its sectional run with a 4-1 victory over No. 8 seed Canandaigua in the quarterfinals and then collected an 8-3 semifinal victory over No. 5 seed Aquinas to reach the Class B title game. Batavia Notre Dame (No. 12 NYSSWA Division II) earned a 8-1 quarterfinal victory against No. 7 seed Churchville-Chili then secured a 5-3 victory in the semifinals against No. 3 seed Webster Schroeder to return to the Class B championship for the second year in a row.

Trends: Victor has won back-to-back contests after enduring a five-game winless streak to end the regular season. The Blue Devils have scored four-plus goals in the two victories. Batavia Notre Dame has won seven of its last eight contests. The United has let up three or less goals in all of eight of the contests including three shutouts.
Players to watch for Victor: Oliver Kowal Jr. F 27 goals, 15 assists, 42 points; Simon Kowal Sr. F 17 goals, 21 assists, 38 points; Dylan Weldon Sr. F 12 goals, 15 assists, 27 points; Caleb Clark Sr. F 11 goals, 13 assists, 24 points; Nathan MacBride Sr. G 16-5-1, three shutout, 2.27 goals against average, .907 save percentage.
Batavia Notre Dame: Jameson Motyka Sr. F 36 goals, 33 assists, 69 points; Brady Johnson Sr. F 10 goals, 28 assists, 38 points; Jake Hutchins Sr. F 10 goals, 23 assists, 33 points; Sam Pies Sr. F 15 goals, 16 assists, 31 points; Rhys Tanner Sr. G 12-5-3, three shutouts, 2.19 goals against average, .917 save percentage.

History 101: Victor is looking to claim its first sectional title since 2022 and first Class B title since 2016 when the Blue Devils defeated Webster Thomas to repeat as champions (Victor participated in Class A from 2017-23). Batavia Notre Dame is looking to be the first team since Webster Thomas in 2019 and 2020 to repeat as Class B champion. The last time the two met in sectionals was in 2023 when the Blue Devils bested the United in the Class A semifinals.
What’s next: The winner will move on to the 2025 NYSPHSAA quarterfinal on March 8.
