Byron-Bergen will face Section VI’s Frewsburg in the Class C Far West Regional on Saturday, November 9 at Williamsville East High School at 11 a.m. Here’s what you need to know:

Section V Qualifier BYRON-BERGEN BEES (19-1-1/GENESEE 1)
vs.
Section VI Qualifier FREWSBURG BEARS (17-1/CCAA 3)

How they arrived here: Byron-Bergen (NYSSWA No. 3) began the Class C2 section of Section V tournament by beating No. 15 Red Jacket (10-0) then No. 7 Gananda (3-0) and No. 3 Genesee Valley-Belfast (6-1) in the quarterfinals and semifinals, respectively before beating Kendall 1-0 in the C2 title game. In the regional qualifier, the Bees secured a spot in the state tournament with a 2-1 victory over Williamson. Frewsburg (NYSSWA No. 6) opened the Class C Section VI tournament with a bye into the semifinals as the second-seed, where they beat No. 3 seed Wilson (3-1) and then defeated No. 5 seed Randolph (2-0) to secure a spot in the state tournament.

Total goals scored: Byron-Bergen (107), Frewsburg (117)

Total goals allowed: Byron-Bergen (7), Frewsburg (6)

Trends: Byron-Bergen enters the state tournament on a six-game win streak, having beaten Aquinas in its regular season finale before winning five in postseason play. Frewsburg’s lone loss came to Allegany-Limestone on September 14, when it fell, 2-1. The Bears have won 13 straight since.

Players to watch for Byron-Bergen: Mia Gray Jr. M (36 goals, 24 assists); Janessa Amesbury Sr. F (18 goals, 8 assists); Grace DiQuattro Jr. F (17 goals, 24 assists); Elizabeth Starowitz Jr. M (15 goals, 10 assists); Riley Shallenberger So. M (3 goals, 10 assists); Natalie Prinzi Sr. GK (89 saves and 5 goals allowed in 1690 minutes)

Frewsburg: Ava Jimerson Jr. (43 goals, 16 assists); Audrey Eckwahl So. (29 goals, 17 assists); Taytum Jimerson Sr. (16 goals, 25 assists); Jaden Jimerson Fr. (8 goals, 12 assists); Brionna Dumaine Sr. (7 goals, 13 assists); Elysse Gruber Fr. GK (72 saves, 6 goals allowed in 1380 minutes)

Coaches: Wayne Hill (Byron-Bergen), Scott Stone (Frewsburg)

History 101: Byron-Bergen has won eight sectional titles and clinched its third regional appearance in the last four years with its win on Tuesday. The Bees have beaten Frewsburg the last two times they’ve met in the Far West Regional in 2021 and 2022. Frewsburg has won six straight Class C titles out of Section VI but has lost to the Section V champion each time the postseason has been played (there was no state tournament in 2020 due to COVID-19).

What’s next: The winner will face either Tuckahoe (I) or Burke Catholic (IX) in the state semifinals on Saturday, Nov. 16.
