Advantage Federal Credit Union Sectional Championship Preview: Avon, Hornell meet to decide Boys’ Class B title

One program aims for a second-straight championship. The other is looking for a second title in the Past three years. Hornell and Avon will meet with goals of a Sectional Championship on the line. Here’s the breakdown:

No. 2 seed HORNELL RED RAIDERS (15-1-1 / Livingston I)
vs.
No. 5 seed AVON BRAVES (12-6-1 / Livingston II)

How they arrived here: Hornell (No. 8 NYSSWA) defeated Letchworth/Warsaw (5-0), Haverling (8-0) and Wellsville (1-0) to advance to the Class B championship game. Avon beat Bishop Kearney/Chesterton (2-0), Dansville (1-0) and top-seeded Livonia (1-0) to reach the title game.

Total goals scored: Hornell (77), Avon (24)

Total goals allowed: Hornell (12), Avon (11)

Trends: Hornell is riding a nine-game win streak. Avon has won three-straight after dropping the season finale. Both teams have yet to concede a goal in the postseason.

Players to watch for Hornell: Wyatt Evingham Jr. F (19 G, 18 A); Gabriel Rasephei Jr. MF (12 G, four A); PJ Picco Sr. MF (11 G, 13 A); Marco Picco Jr. MF (11 G, seven A); Aquiles Souza So. MF (four G, six A); Alfie Whiteley Jr. GK (25 saves, nine goals against).

Avon: Josh Harter Sr. MF (10 G, five A); Trevor Stroud Jr. MF (nine G, three A); Elisha Swift Fr. MF (three G, two A); Caden Leonard Jr. F (two G, three A); Ryan Weslowski Jr. MF (two G, two A); Brody McDowell Sr. D (1 A); Jack DeVito So. GK (112 saves, 11 goals against).

Coaches: Jim Tobin (Hornell), Tony Patti (Avon)

History 101: Hornell enters the sectional final looking for a second-straight championship and sixth in program history. Last season, the Red Raiders downed Bishop Kearney/Chesterton 3-1 in the final, but fell to the eventual state champion East Aurora (VI) in the Far West Regional. Avon last won a sectional title in 2022 and is looking for its second in program history.

What’s next: A spot in the Class B Far West Regional against the Section VI Class B winner.

Kickoff is set for 5 p.m. on Saturday at Honeoye Falls-Lima.
