Dylan Crews went 2-for-4 with two runs scored, two RBI, and a two-run home run in the fifth inning to help lead the Rochester Red Wings on the road past the Buffalo Bisons, 10-4 in International League action Friday night at Sahlen Field. Crews was also one of the six straight runs scored in the seventh inning to break a tie and put the game out of reach.
Tied 2-2, Jack Dunn started the rally with a line drive single to right field. Darren Baker singled immediately after. Crews was then hit by a pitch to load the bases with no outs for the Red Wings. The first score of the inning came from Dunn as he was able to walk home after teammate Jose Tena worked a base on balls. Andres Chaparro walked following Tena to bring home Baker and put the Red Wings up two.
After a pop out, Brady House then singled to center field sending a pair of runners, Crews and Tena home. Drew Millas and Jake Alu followed suit with back-to-back run-scoring singles to make it an 8-2 game.
Millas went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored in the win. Dunn finished 2-for-4 with a run scored. Alu went 2-for-4 with two RBI. Chaparro had two RBI, two runs scored, and a homerun in a 1-for-3 effort.
Andrew Alverez started and pitched 5.1 innings and struck out seven batters. Rico Garcia struck out four batters over two innings of relief work.
Buffalo struck first in the first inning after a double to right field by Damiano Palmegiani sent Will Wagner home after he singled to lead things off. The Bisons kept that momentum going in the second inning as Josh Kasevich got home thanks to a sacrifice fly to right field by Max McDowell to give the Bisons an early 2-0 lead.
There was no scoring until the fifth inning when the Red Wings got on the board. That’s when Crews got the offense going for the Red Wings as he sent a ball over the center field wall to tie the game with a two-run home run as he and Baker scored. The momentum carried from there.
After the six-run seventh inning, Buffalo was able to add two runs to their total in the bottom of the seventh. Jonatan Clase doubled to left field allowing teammate Rafael Lantigua to score after he singled earlier. Then Joey Votto hit a sacrifice fly to left field to send Gabriel Cancel home who was hit by a pitch earlier in the inning.
That did not slow down the Red Wings though as they put the finishing touches on the game and scored runs in the eighth and ninth innings. Chaparro hit a solo home run in the eighth. Then in the ninth, Millas tripled to get into scoring position and was then rewarded by teammate Alu as he hit a sacrifice fly to right field to score their tenth run of the game.
On the Bisons side, Chase finished 2-for-5 with an RBI. Lantigua went 2-for-4 with a run scored and Wagner scored a run in a 1-for-4 effort.
With the win, the Red Wings tie the season series against the Bisons 2-2 and look ahead to tomorrow, Saturday August 10, as the thruway rivals meet for the fifth game in this series. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. at Sahlen Field.
