The Rochester Red Wings will have an All-Star on the mound on Tuesday: the Washington Nationals have sent Josiah Gray to Rochester for a rehab start.
The 26-year-old righty earned a spot in the MLB All-Star Game last season after a first half where he had a 3.41 ERA and held opponents to a .253 batting average in 18 starts. While he struggled in the second half on the way to an 8-13 record and 3.91 ERA, the New Rochelle native began the season as one of the Nationals’ top pitchers before going on the injured list with a right elbow/forearm flexor strain on April 9 (retroactive to April 6).

Gray is no strange to Upstate New York, having played his college ball at Le Moyne College in Syracuse. Drafted in the second round of the 2018 draft by Cincinnati Reds, he was traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers in December of that year before entering the Nationals’ organization in the Max Scherzer deal in 2021.
This will be Gray’s fourth and possibly final rehab assignment. He threw 79 pitches for AA Harrisburg last Wednesday, giving up two runs on three hits and three walks while striking out five.
Tuesday’s game against Indianapolis was already set to be a notable one for the Red Wings. Besides being the first game of the second half of the International League’s split-season schedule, the game will also see the Innovative Field debut of outfielder Dylan Crews, the No. 6 prospect in all of baseball according to MLB.com. First pitch is 6:45 P.M. The Red Wings have declared it “Opening Day 2.0”, with post-game fireworks and a James Wood magnet giveaway.
