The Wings (36-35) had a chance to score first, as second baseman Darren Baker tripled with one out in the top of the first. However, the speedy 25-year-old was thrown out at home when the next batter, Crews, grounded to short. Although Crews stole second to again put a man into scoring position, the Wings proved unable to score.
In the bottom half of the inning, Syracuse (46-26) struck with all three of their runs for the game, as Brett Baty drove in Rhylan Thomas before Luke Ritter brought home an additional two on a double to make it 3-0.
Crews’ home run, ultimately the lone Rochester run of the game, came with two outs in the fifth, as he got hold of a Jose Butto 94.9 MPH fastball in the upper part of the zone and smashed it 441 feet to left center with a exit velocity of 108.6 MPH to make the game 3-1.
That score remained like that for the rest of the game, despite the Red Wings loading the bases with one out in the ninth before Alex Call and Baker both flew out for the final two outs of the game.
Rochester starter Spenser Watkins (4-3) went seven innings, allowing six hits and the three earned runs while striking out one. Eduardo Salazar pitched a hitless eighth. At the plate, Crews and Harold Ramirez each had two hits.
The two teams play again on Saturday at 6:35 P.M., with Rochester sending out righty Jackson Rutledge (3-4, 6.63) against lefty Joey Lucchesi (4-3, 4.03). After a series finale on Sunday, the Wings return home on Tuesday to face Indianapolis, when reports say that the Wings will have Nationals starter Josiah Gray on the mound for a rehab start.
