Class A Far West Regional to be decided between Pittsford Sutherland and Amherst

One squad has picked up wins in seven of the past eight games, while the other is looking to advance to its sixth state semifinal in program history. Section V meets Section VI when Pittsford Sutherland and Amherst battle on Saturday to send one school to the NYS Class A semifinals.

PITTSFORD SUTHERLAND KNIGHTS (17-6/Monroe County IV)

How they arrived here: Pittsford Sutherland defeated Eastridge 12-3 and Aquinas 2-1 to reach the sectional final for the third straight year, where the Knights defeated Honeoye Falls-Lima 8-4. Amherst picked up wins over CSAT (28-2), Pioneer (11-4), and Kenmore East (7-0) to win the Section VI Class A1 title. In the regional qualifier, Amherst took down Maryvale 12-9.

Tempo and Trends: Pittsford Sutherland averages 6.5 runs per game and allows 3.7 runs. The Knights have won four straight games. Amherst produces 8.8 runs a game offensively while allowing 3.4 runs a game on defense. The Tigers have claimed victories in seven of their last eight games.

History 101: Pittsford Sutherland has a 5-4 all-time record in regional games, with its most recent win being a 7-0 win over Olean in 2017. Section V has split Far West Regional games with Section VI since 2010, with each section nabbing six wins. Amherst baseball is making its first regional appearance since 1993. 

What’s at stake: A spot in the NYS Class A semifinals.
