WEBSTER, N.Y. — As the Class B swimming sectionals were winding down, something occurred to McQuaid Jesuit’s Athletic Director Jon Matt.

“I’m going to have to get a new banner for the gym.”

That’s because, for the first time, the McQuaid swim team was about to win a sectional championship.

The Knights won all but three events and claimed the team title 323-272 over Canandaigua.

Honeoye Falls-Lima was third with 265.5.

The meet started with the relay team of Ian Miller, Ben Hinds, Xavier Joseph, and Luke McCormack winning the 200-yard Medley Relay in a state meet qualifying time of 1:36.41, nearly nine seconds quicker than the second-place team from Canandaigua.  That same quartet also closed out the meet with a win in the 400-yard Freestyle relay that also earned them a spot in the state race in Ithaca in two weeks.

Hinds will also compete at states in the 100-meter Breaststroke and 200 IM, Miller in the 100 Back and 100 Butterfly, and McCormack in the 100 Free.  Other state qualifiers are George Newsome of Pal-Mac in the 200 and 500 Free, Batavia Notre Dame’s Harry Southall in the 50 Free and 100 Butterfly, and Aiden Agostini from Spencerport in the 100 Breaststroke.

Miller, who is only a freshman, was also named Swimmer of the Meet for his wins in the relays as well as his two individual wins in the 100 Backstroke and 100 Butterfly.

That banner that is going up at McQuaid might get some more use sooner, rather than later.  The other three winners for the Knights are all sophomores.

Correction: Luke McCormack also made States cut in the 200 Freestyle in addition to the 100 Freestyle for individual events.
