IRONDEQUOIT, N.Y. — Host Irondequoit used a 12-4 run spanning the third and fourth quarters to break a 40-all tie and went on to hold off Edison/SWW 65-59 in a Wednesday afternoon matinee. The game was evenly matched throughout, with 16 lead changes through the first three quarters.
“We really prepared for this one, this is one we really wanted,” said Irondequoit coach Kyle Trevas. “They get after it, their zone can be difficult.”
Edison/SWW got the Eagles’ attention right away as Davijon Lipscomb hit back-to-back triples on the Inventors’ first two possessions, part of his game-high 21 points on the afternoon.
“Lipscomb is a great player, we knew we were going to have our hands full,” Trevas said. “We had a couple of lapses in play, then I called a timeout. We reconvened and we came out after that and slowly picked away but I thought overall we did a good job defensively on him. He’s very hard to guard.”
Edison built its biggest lead of the game in the first quarter at 15-8 behind six points apiece from Lipscomb and big man Isaiah Wonneberg. The Eagles responded with the last 10 points of the quarter as Quinn VanKerkhove netted five of his team-high 19 in this stretch.
The second quarter was a back-and-forth affair with the biggest margin in favor of the Inventors at 26-22, midway through the frame. The rest of the quarter was played within a single possession and featured seven lead changes. Edison got a late bucket from point guard Jearney Higdon to take a 30-29 lead into the half.

The third quarter looked to be more of the same as both teams traded baskets and the lead through the first five minutes. With the Inventors ahead 42-41, Isaiah Ballard got the ball at midcourt off an Edison/SWW turnover and went in for a one-handed dunk that gave the Eagles a lead they did not surrender. DJ Kemp followed with a three-pointer for the Eagles. Higdon hit a pair of free throws with 0.1 seconds left in the quarter for the Inventors to end the quarter with the Eagles holding a 46-44 edge.
The Eagles scored the first six points of the fourth quarter as Goti Bandas scored the first four points underneath off of two slick passes from VanKerkhove and Ballard respectively. VanKerkhove then hit two free throws to give the Eagles their biggest lead of the game at 8 points, 52-44. The foul was the fourth for Lipscomb but he was able to finish the game without picking up a fifth foul.
The Inventors twice pulled within three points in the game’s final minutes but a 3-10 performance at the foul line in the final quarter hurt their chances at regaining the lead.
“It was an exciting game from an outsider’s perspective, coaching it was very stressful,” said Trevas. “Both teams really battled, it was back and forth.”
Eight different players scored for the Eagles, who improved to 3-3 on the season. Aside from VanKerkhove’s 19, the Eagles got 14 from Nikki Yudin including three triples, nine from Chase Leonardo who also had three triples, eight from Kemp, five from Ballard, four each from Bandas and Josh Morse and two from Jayden Patterson.
“Isaiah (Ballard) didn’t get as many shots as we like him to get, but he’s so unselfish, he never says anything, but he does so much more, the rebounding and defending,” said Trevas.
Edison (4-3) got 12 points from Wonneberg, nine from Higdon, seven from Javier Medina, six from Jabric Larkins and four from Shamier Hooks in addition to Lipscomb’s 21.
