Byron-Bergen and Holley to battle for regional spot

A pair of teams ranked among the top ten in the state will battle when Genesee Region foes Byron-Bergen and Holley meet for a spot in the New York State Class C Far West Regional. Here’s the breakdown:

HOLLEY HAWKS (16-3-0/Genesee Region I)
vs.
BYRON-BERGEN BEES (17-3-0/Genesee Region Division II)

How they arrived here: Holley (No. 9 NYSSWA Class C) opened the postseason with 4-0 win over No. 8 seed Red Creek then a 7-0 win over No. 4 seed Bloomfield before winning its first sectional title in 29 years with a 2-1 win over No. 2 Williamson. Byron-Bergen (No. 7 NYSSWA Class C) defeated No. 13 seed Bolivar-Richburg (9-0), No. 5 seed Dundee/Bradford (9-0), top-seeded Gananda (4-1) and a 4-3 defeat of No. 3 Keshequa in overtime to claim a third straight sectional title and fifth in program history.

Total goals scored: Holley (77), Byron-Bergen (117)

Total goals allowed: Holley (19), Byron-Bergen (19)

Trends: After starting the season with two losses in its first five games, Holley has dropped one decisions in its past 14 games and is outscoring opponents 74-8 during that period. Byron-Bergen has won six straight games and eight of nine. Byron-Bergen took a 6-0 decision when the two teams met on September 15th.

Players to watch for Holley: Samantha Bates Sr. Midfielder 27 goals and 10 assists; Jailyn Bishop Sr. Midfielder 11 goals and 13 assists; Emma Brady Sr. Midfielder nine goals, eight assists; Natalie Foose Jr. Midfielder one goal, four assists; Isabella Thom Sr. D five goals, seven assists; Layne Walker Sr. Goalkeeper 1,155 minutes in goal and 26 saves; Leigha Walker Sr. D. four goals, three assists.

Byron-Bergen: Grace DiQuattro So. F 16 goals, 14 assists; Mia Gray So. MF 32 goals, 27 assists; Ava Gray Sr. D one goal, four assists; MacKenzie Hagen Sr. F 26 goals, nine assists; Novalee Pocock Sr. GK 74 saves, 705 minutes in goal; Natalie Prinzi Jr. GK 775 minutes played in goal, 64 saves; Victoria Rogoyski Sr. Midfielder six goals, five assists; Riley Shallenberger Fr. MF five assists, three goals; Elizabeth Starowitz So. Midfielder 13 assists, nine goals; Emma Starowitz Sr. F 20 goals, 10 assists.

Coaches: Renee Wolf (Holley), Wayne Hill (Byron-Bergen)

History 101: Holley is looking to make its first regional appearance in program history having not advanced in 1989 nor 1994 when the Hawks won their previous titles. Byron-Bergen is looking to make its third straight regional appearance. The Bees have advanced to the state semifinals in each of the past three season.

What’s next: The winner will advance to the New York State Class C Far West Regional to face Section VI champion Frewsburg (12-2-3).

Kickoff is scheduled for Wednesday, 5:00 PM at Geneseo High School.
