MENDON, N.Y. — Leyla Tozin (Brighton) defeated Emily Miller (Victor) 6-2, 6-0 to clinch a third straight appearance in the New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) Class A quarterfinals.
Tozin defeated Omika Patel (Pittsford Mendon) 6-3, 6-1 while Miller defeated Sophia Carling (Harley Allendale Columbia) 6-2, 6-1 in regional qualifier action from Mendon Racquet Club this past weekend. Tozin and Miller met in the Class A1 sectional finals just a few weeks ago when Tozin defeated Miller in two sets 6-2, 6-1.
In the playback round, Carling defeated Patel in three sets 3-6, 6-1, 7-6(4) to place third at the event. Tozin, Miller and Carling will advance to the NYSPHSAA tournament.

Sixteen doubles teams competed for an opportunity to earn one of the three spots that will advance to the state championships. Ella Hall and Samantha Kotz (Brighton) advanced to play in the semi-finals on Saturday as did ShuShu Wu and Caroline Fitzsimmons (Pittsford Sutherland), Jasmine Wu and Emma Hu (Pittsford Sutherland), and Aiza Ahmed and Sophie Khan (Pittsford Mendon).
Hall and Kotz defeated J. Wu and Hu after dropping the first set, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4. The marathon match of the day occurred between S. Wu and Fitzsimmons and Ahmed and Khan lasting approximately three hours. S. Wu and Fitzsimmons won the third set after losing an extremely close second set, 6-3, 5-7, 6-4. In the finals, Hall and Kotz defeated S. Wu and Fitzsimmons in a two-set match 7-5, 7-6(5) as the duo clinched its first spot in regionals.
In the doubles playback round, Ahmed and Khan defeated J. Wu and Hu 7-5, 6-4. Three teams, Hall and Kotz, S. Wu and Fitzsimmons and Ahmed and Khan, earned a spot to compete in the state tournament.
The NYSPHSAA Championships will be held October 26th-28th at Sportime Tennis in Schenectady.
