ROCHESTER, N.Y. — No. 7 University of Rochester men’s soccer battled the Stevens Institute of Technology Ducks to a scoreless draw on Saturday evening at Fauver Stadium.
Despite being outshot, 10-8 and 3-1 on goal, Santino Lupica-Tondo saved all three of the Ducks’ shots on goal while Justin Cross made one save in net for Stevens.
On a 5th-minute corner for UR, Tyler Moran would get off the ‘Jackets first shot of the game, sending one wide, while Dylan Maund picked up the Ducks’ first shot in the 9th minute, with his shot blocked.
Ethan Hagen forced the first of Lupica-Tondo’s three saves in the 16th minute, sending a shot toward the upper-left corner of the goal on Stevens’ counterattack, but Lupica-Tondo made the save to keep things scoreless.
Neither team would get a shot on goal the rest of the first half, combining for just six shots in the opening period, before both teams ratcheted up the pressure in the second half.
Fritz Kabeiseman sent one wide sandwiched in-between two Stevens corners to start the second half, while Nick Swanger couldn’t fully corral a cross just minutes later and missed wide right.
In the 66th minute, Matt Cosentino sent one way wide off a UR corner, and just minutes later had the Yellowjackets’ best look of the night. Dribbling into the box in the 71st minute, Cosentino found some space and sent a right-footed blast at Cross, but the Ducks’ keeper made the save to keep Rochester off the scoreboard.
The Ducks would have the majority of the chances the rest of the way, beginning with a blast from Maund inside the box in the 79th minute that was blocked away by Andrew Moglianesi.
Moglianesi would block another volley from Maund in the 83rd minute before Lupica-Tondo stepped up to make his two second-half saves. In the 85th minute, Ben Goldberg settled a cross to the left of the goal before whipping a shot on goal, but the senior made a diving save, blocking the ball out of bounds for a corner.
While in the 87th minute, Lupica-Tondo again kept Stevens off the scoreboard with a diving save on Bruno Andino’s header on a Ducks’ cross into the box. Maund would then send another shot wide before the clock hit zero, giving both teams a result with a scoreless draw.
No. 7 Rochester moves to 5-0-2 with the win, while the Ducks, who reached the NCAA Tournament Semifinals last season, fall to 3-1-3 on the year.
Moran and Cosentino each led UR with a pair of shots, while Maund had four for Stevens. Lupica-Tondo made three saves in goal for the Yellowjackets, facing 10 total shots.
Rochester next makes the short trip to Geneseo, NY for a non-conference matchup against SUNY Geneseo on Tuesday, Sept. 26 at 7:00 p.m.
