Starter Wily Peralta went five innings of one-hit pitching while walking three and striking out six. He didn’t allow a hit until the fifth inning. The only trouble faced didn’t involve a hit, though, and came in the third inning. After walking two batters, Peralta committed a throwing error on a would-be sacrifice bunt that allowed Niko Kavadas to score from second to make it 1-0 for Worcester. Bradley Zimmer scored on a groundout the next at-bat to extend the lead to 2-0.
Rochester came back in the bottom of the inning. With one out, left fielder Jacob Young hit his first AAA home run to narrow the score to 2-1. Darren Baker followed up Young’s homer with a triple to center- his fourth of the season- before scoring the tying run on a fielder’s choice when Luis Garcia grounded out.
Worcester took the lead back in the top of the sixth, 4-2, against Wings’ reliever Anthony Banda when runners from second and third scored on a two-out throwing error by Jack Dunn. Although Rochester plated a run in the seventh on an RBI single by Young, it wouldn’t be enough as Worcester took home the 4-3 win.
The Red Wings continue their series with Worcester (29-18 in the second half, 68-54 overall, tied for first) on Friday at 6:45 p.m. Right-hander Cory Abbott (2-4, 5.71) is scheduled to start for the Wings in his first appearance for the team since being sent down from Washington on August 20. Worcester’s probable pitcher is left-hander Shane Drohan (4-4, 5.52).
