Former Spencerport high school girls soccer star Leah Wengender was recently named to the Hermann Trophy watch list.
Wengender is currently in her fifth season for the University at Buffalo (UB) women’s soccer team. She is one of over 50 college women’s soccer players named to the list.
The Hermann Trophy is presented annually by the Missouri Athletic Club (MAC). It is the “nation’s highest individual honor recognizing” the National Player of the Year, which is determined by the voting of Division I coaches that are members of United Soccer Coaches.
The winner of the Hermann Trophy will be announced in a ceremony on Jan. 5 of next year. Three finalists for the award will be announced on Dec. 6.
Wengender scored a goal in the Bulls’ 2-1 win over Ohio State on Sunday. It was UB’s first victory over a Power 5 conference opponent since 2015.
In the 2022 season with the Bulls, Wengender finished with five goals, three assists and a 54.8 shot-on-percentage (23-of-42 shots on goal). One of Wengender’s goal in this season was a game-winning shot.
Wengender’s standout performances for Spencerport aided the teams’ efforts in winning Section V titles in 2016 through 2018. She also helped the Rangers capture state titles in 2016 and 2017, while also receiving most valuable player (MVP) honors at the 2017 state tournament. Wengender also received a first-team all-state nod in 2017. She is a first-team Section V All-Decade member.
