After a well needed five day rest, the Rochester Red Wings came back from the All-Star break with a 4-2 victory against the Syracuse Mets in the second rendition of the Duel of the Dishes Friday evening.
Rochester wasted no time to get on the scoreboard as they struck in the first inning putting up a crooked number the Mets couldn’t match. Travis Blankenhorn sent a three-run long ball over the right field wall with one out in the inning. Darren Baker smacked a base hit to lead-off the game and then Jake Alu picked up a base hit of his own with one out to set up the home run. Baker extended his hit streak to 13 games with his lead-off single.
Luke Voit pulled the Mets within two with a solo home run to left field to lead-off the second inning.
Ronny Mauricio brought Syracuse within one with a lead-off solo home run of his own two innings later.
Rochester added an insurance run in the sixth inning when Derek Hill announced his presence after returning to the Red Wings lineup with a lead-off home run that went over the left field fence.
Blake Rutherford extended his on-base streak to 17 games with a 2-for-4 performance at the plate.
Besides the two solo long balls, the Rochester pitching was able to limit the Mets offense giving up four hits aside from the home runs. Jackson Rutledge earned his first Triple-A victory in his third career start after being called-up on June 27. The right-hander struck out five over five innings of work and gave up two earned runs on four hits and one walk.
Joe La Sorsa, Tyler Danish, and Gerson Moreno pitched out of the bullpen for Rochester and limited the Syracuse offense to two hits in the four innings they pitched. The bullpen combined for six strikeouts. Moreno collected his sixth save of the season and extended his no-hits streak to five games.
Rochester currently has 199 wins against Syracuse since 2001. The Red Wings snapped a losing streak against the Mets dating back to the end of their series on June 4.
The Rochester Red Wings (7-6, 41-45) will look to continue their winning ways against Syracuse (2-10, 35-51) as they continue their three-game series Saturday at 6:35 p.m. Rochester’s starter is to be determined while the Mets will send southpaw Joey Lucchesi (6-3, 3.59) to the mound.
