Sodus Spartan Logan Bulman came into his junior year after a disappointing end to his sophomore campaign, when the Spartans lost in the C1 sectional championship.
However, according to Sodus head coach Alva English, the eventual 2023 Section V Class C1 Player of the Year came back filled with energy and drive.
“Logan went out there this year with a very strong mindset this year to go out there and be untouchable. He definitely showed up this year ready to go from day one.”
“I definitely had to take a whole different approach at the plate and at the mound,” said Bulman. “More positive thinking like, ‘I’m going to hit the ball.'”

Bulman finished his season batting .549, with 25 RBI and 26 runs scored. On the mound, he was 7-1 with an ERA of 1.15, with three complete games, including one no-hitter.
But to English, he was most impressed with Bulman when he wasn’t playing. After suffering a season-ending injury shortly before sectionals began, Bulman stepped up as a mentor.
“He was there every game, being supportive, being a positive teammate. Helping guys out, he basically became another coach. He sets the standard of what it means to be a Sodus Spartan.”
Despite the injury to Bulman, Sodus went on to win their first sectional championship since 2003.
“We had a really good season,” said Bulman. “Things came along nice and we had good chemistry.”
“People stepped up to make things happen,” said English.
Bill McClare and his Gananda Panthers played Bulman and Sodus a pair of times over the course of the season.
“You really notice his maturity and composure on the mound,” said McClare. “At the plate he’s a pretty dangerous hitter too, hitting at the top of their order too.”
“Logan has definitely earned it”, said English. “From a program standpoint, it inspires our next group of kids coming up to achieve try and achieve that level. For me, to have a player of that caliber I’m blessed.”
Bulman’s teammate Jacob Laird (Sr. .508 BA, 41 RBI, 38 RS, 15 2B, 1 HR) also made the All-C1 team. Fellow Wayne County players to make the team include Williamson’s Matt DeFisher (Sr. UTIL) and Gananda’s Henry Shutts (Fr. .464 BA, 20 RBI, 21 RS, 9 2B, 3 2B) (1.47 ERA, 105 K, .216 BAA).
Livingston County had four players make the team, being Adam Halsey (Jr.) from Letchworth, Christopher Kashorek (Sr.) from Avon, along with Geneseo seniors Ethan Bennett (.519/.580/.649/1.229)) and Ryan Whitney (.483 BA, 33 RBI, 13 RS, 1 HR).
Two players from the Genesee Region made it, being Colton Yasses (Sr. P/INF .320 BA, 15 RBI, 16 RS, 1 HR) (0.77 ERA, 41 K, .119 BAA) from Oakfield-Alabama, and Trenton Woods (Jr. 424 BA, 10 2Bs, 18 SB) (24 PO) from Addison.
Bloomfield’s Gabe Ward (Sr. UTIL .490 BA, 27 RBI, 14 RS) (0.97 ERA, 40 K, .134 BAA) made the team from the Finger Lakes East.
Andrew Jones (So. .500 BA, 18 RBI, 6 2B, 29 RS) (1.57 ERA, 107 K) made the team from Steuben County’s Addison.
