Catcher Luis Torrens exploded for six RBI with three hits including two long balls to help the Rochester Red Wings win an offensive-led contest 12-10 over the Worcester Red Sox, Wednesday afternoon.
After the Red Wings fell behind 4-0 in the first inning, Torrens opened up the Rochester offense with a two-run home run to right center field to cut the Worcester lead in half. Nomar Mazara led off the inning with a walk to set up the long ball two batters later.
Rochester’s offense continued to score runs the following inning by pushing across four runners to take the lead. Jake Alu hit a sacrifice fly to score Cody Wilson to pull the Wings within one. Carter Kieboom tied the game with a base hit that scored Derek Hill who doubled earlier in the inning to extend his hitting streak to 19 games. Travis Blankenhorn grounded out to score Kieboom to give the Red Wings the lead. Mazara scored to extend the lead after Torrrens reached base via an error.
The offensive show continued into the fourth inning as Rochester scored two more runs. Hill scored Erick Mejia on a base hit to left field. Alu tallied his second RBI of the afternoon with a ground out that scored Richie Martin.
After the Red Sox came within a run in the bottom half of the fourth, Torrens continued his strong performance at the plate with an RBI double that scored Blankenhorn.
The right-handed catcher put the game out of reach in the seventh inning with his second long ball of the afternoon, scoring three after Worcester tied the game in the bottom of the sixth.
Rochester used five pitchers out of the bullpen with left-hander Anthony Banda getting the start and Tommy Romero getting credited with the win.
Yu Chang opened the scoring for Worcester in the first inning when he scored on a passed ball with one out in the inning. Ryan Fitzgerald hit a two-RBI double that scored Nick Sogard and Bobby Dalbec. Fitzgerald would come around to score on a Ronaldo Hernandez groundout.
In the fourth, Hernandez launched a two-run home run to pull the Red Sox within two. Chang made the game 8-7 in the fourth with an RBI base hit that scored former Wing Daniel Palka.
Narciso Crook brought the Red Sox back within one in the sixth with a base hit that drove in Hernandez. Sogard tied the game with a forceout that scored Bradley Zimmer. Niko Goodrum hit a sacrifice fly in the ninth to push across Fitzgerald to try to start a rally for Worcester that fell short.
Rochester who has won 11 of its last 14, will look to make it three wins in a row as the Wings continue the series against Worcester as they will send right-hander Wily Peralta (1-4, 5.83) to the mound while the Red Sox will start left-hander Rio Gomez (0-0, 2.08) on Thursday at 6:45 p.m.

Wings have been playing decent ball lately. Perhaps they are gearing up for the start of the 2nd season…and ironically it will begin with a series against the 1st season probable winners Norfolk. Wings lost their series (and one game was cancelled due to weather and no place to make it up) earlier in this season.
While the parent Nats continue to go nowhere fast, Wings have a few real good bats in their lineup these days. Pitching has been below average, but the wins are fun and the crowds really turned out last homestand..even with stiff competition from the Amerks.
After that horrible start, a .500 or better 1st half would be more than acceptable. Last winning season came in 2017..the tail end of a nice run from 2013 to 2017.
