Mr. Kyle Trevas was appointed head coach of the Irondequoit High School varsity basketball team by the West Irondequoit CSD Board of Education at Thursday’s Board of Education meeting.
A 2001 Irondequoit High School graduate, Mr. Trevas has spent 14 of his 17 seasons as a boys’ basketball coach in West Irondequoit, including the past five as head coach of the IHS junior varsity.
He replaces Chris Cardon, who retired after a 37-year career that included four Section V titles.
The Eagles went 22-5 last winter and were Class A state runners-up. Cardon’s 523 wins rank fourth in Section V history.
“I am excited and grateful for the opportunity to lead a program that I played in, have coached in and care so deeply about,” said Trevas, who played for Cardon at IHS before coaching alongside him. “Coach Cardon has been a mentor to me and many others. I look forward to carrying on our great tradition and rolling up my sleeves to continue to develop our hard-working student-athletes.”
An elementary physical education teacher for 15 years, including the past seven in West Irondequoit (Listwood and Southlawn schools), Mr. Trevas earned his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from SUNY Brockport.
Beyond coaching JV at IHS the past five seasons (the Eagles were 11-9 last winter and finished second in their division), Mr. Trevas was an IHS varsity assistant under Cardon for seven seasons (2008-15). He has varsity head coaching experience at Spencerport High School (2015-18).
Mr. Trevas started in West Irondequoit as head modified coach from 2006-08. He and his wife, Carissa, reside in Chili.
