Addison and Bolivar-Richburg to battle for spot in Class C regional

One team opened the postseason as a top seed, the other as No. 8. Both have a chance at clinching a spot in the state quarterfinals, Tuesday evening. Allegany County meets Steuben for a spot in the 2023 Class C Softball Far West Regional Qualifier. Here’s the breakdown:

CLASS C

 BOLIVAR-RICHBURG (22-2/Allegany County)
vs.
ADDISON KNIGHTS (16-7/Steuben County)

5:00 Tuesday at Fillmore HS

Tempo and Trends: Bolivar-Richburg scores 12.5 runs per game and holds teams to two runs per game defensively. The Wolverines enter the game on a eight-game winning streak. Addison put up 8.5 runs per game on offense and allowed 4.4 runs per game on defense. The Knights have won five straight games.

How they arrived here: Addison beat No. 9 seed Marion/Gananda 9-0 in the first round before taking down No. 1 seeded Bloomfield 5-4 in the quarterfinals. A 5-2 win over No. 4 seed Oakfield-Alabama gave them a spot in the C2 Championship where they won over No. 6 seed Letchworth 4-2. Bolivar-Richburg defeated No. 16 seed Eugenio Maria de Hostos 7-0 in the opening round before advancing to beat No. 9 seed Cuba-Rushford 2-1. A 10-5 win over No. 4 seed Byron Bergen clinched the Wolverines a spot in the C1 sectional title game, which they won against No. 3 seed Dundee/Bradford, 5-0.

Players to Watch for Bolivar-Richburg:  Malayna Ayers Sr. P/SS (.552 BA, 32 RBI, 10 HR), McKinlee Harris Sr. P/INF (.565 BA, 22 RBI, 40 RS, 2 HR), Madigan Harris (.457 BA, 29 RBI), Haley Mascho (.487 BA, 13 2Bs)

Players to Watch for Addison: Makayla Miller Sr. P/OF (2.60 ERA, 6.86 K/7, .208 BAA, perfect game against Marion/Gananda), Sadie Strauss (.488 BA, 15 2B, 2 3B, 15 HR, 43 RBI) (7 saves, 2.49 ERA), Ava Knowles (.347 BA, 5 2B, 6 3B, 32 RS), Jillian Ames (.342 BA, 5 2B, 4 3B. 33 RS), Hadleigh Watson (.290 BA, 8 2B, 20 RBI, 24 RS), Erin Terwilliger (.290 BA, 5 2B, 1 HR, 19 RBI)

Coaches: Mark Emery (Bolivar-Richburg),  Mike Makowiec (Addison)

History 101: The two teams met once during the regular season, a game in which Bolivar-Richburg won 7-5. Bolivar-Richburg last made the Far West Regional in 2014, a year in which they fell in the state semi-finals. Addison is trying to make its first regional appearance since 2015, a year in which they won the NYS Class C Softball Championship.

What’s at stake: Winner will advance to face the Section VI champion in the NYS Class C Far West Regional against either Chatauqua Lake or Gowanda. 

First pitch is scheduled for May 29th at 5:00 at Fillmore.
