Former Penfield and current University of Miami hurler Gage Ziehl earned National Pitcher of the week honors from Collegiate Baseball on Monday.
Ziehl hurled eight shutout innings and allowed four hits while fanning 12 in a 13-4 victory over Presbyterian on Friday. The right-hander retired 20 of the first 23 batters faced and after a one-out single in the first, recorded seven straight outs including four strikeouts and did not allow a ball to leave the infield in that span.
Ziehl earned ACC Pitcher of the Week honors on March 13.
The Miami ace has an ERA of 4.65 with 78 strikeouts over 69.2 innings. In his 12 starts, Ziehl has gone more than six innings five times and has also allowed two or fewer runs in five of his starts.
Ziehl in his high school career had an ERA of 0.88 and whiffed 202 over 120 innings. At the plate, he batted .427 with 61 RBI and seven long balls over his three year career.
Ziehl led the Patriots to a sectional title in 2021 when he hurled a one-hit shutout against Hilton in the championship game, winning 6-0. Ziehl had an ERA of 0.17 and allowed one run over 42 innings. Section V named him the 2021 Class AA Player of the Year.
The Miami Hurricanes open up a three-game set in Pittsburgh against the Panthers at 6 p.m. on Friday.
Miami is 32-16 on the season and 14-10 in conference play.
