PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher University softball team were at home on Saturday to take on Keuka College in the final double-header of the regular season. The Cardinals took care of business winning 8-0 in the first game and 8-3 in the second game in order to secure the sweep. The Cardinals now hold a 25-11 overall record and 12-4 conference mark. They secured the no. 2 seed in the E8 Softball Championship tournament and will head to Alfred University for the start of the competition.
Game One: Cardinals 8 – Wolves 0
Pitching was the story in the first game, as Jess Patterson tossed another gem to collect her tenth win of the year. She through the complete 6.0 innings and allowed just one hit, while striking out 14. The offense was strong throughout the game, with the first run coming in the second inning, thanks to Cassidy Evanetski putting the ball in play and forcing a Wolves error. The mistake allowed Maddie Donlin to cross home plate.
In the third, with runners on first and second, Allie Klonowski singled up the middle to drive in Claire Boegel. After a quiet fourth, the Cardinals added three runs in the fifth and three more in the sixth. It started with Kelly Cournoyer doubling to center to score Amalia DeMartino and it was followed up by a single by Donlin to push the lead to 4-0. Evanetski added a hit of her own, bringing Donlin home and giving the team a 5-0 lead heading into the sixth.
In the bottom of the frame, with two runners in scoring position, DeMartino tripled to bring them in before scoring herself on a Klownowski single to end the game. Evanetski was 3-for-3 on the day, while Boegle, DeMartino, Klonowski and Donlin all recorded multi-hit performances.
Game Two: Cardinals 8 – Wolves 3
The Wolves offense came alive in the first inning thanks to a pair of errors by the Cardinals. After a mound visit to settle things down, Fisher was able to even the score in the second. Cournoyer sent a homerun to left center to tie the game at 2-2. In the third inning, Madi Rose singled through the left side but advance to third on an error. The mistake proved costly as Tori LoPresto drove her in with a single.
In the fifth frame, the offense began to score insurance runs. DeMartino doubled to left, scoring Maddie Nadrich and Rose. Klownowski continued to use her hot bat with a single through the left side to make the score 6-2 in the Cardinals favor. The final runs came in the sixth, after a double by Rose scored Donlin and an error by Keuka allowed Rose to touch home plate herself.
Evanetsi settled into the game, earning the win after pitching a complete game. She allowed three runs, but none were earned and struck out four batters. Rose tallied three hits, and both Spitz and Cournoyer had two hit games.
