With sectional championships behind them, teams turn their attentions on the state title. The next step in that climb takes place this weekend when five Section V Girls’ Soccer teams take to the pitch in the New York State Far West Regionals. Here’s the breakdown:
Class AA: Friday, November 4, 7:30 PM at Niagara-Wheatfield High School
Section V Class AA Champion WEBSTER SCHROEDER WARRIORS (14-2-3 overall /Monroe County Division 2)
vs.
Section VI Class AA Champion CLARENCE RED DEVILS (17-1 overall / Erie County Interscholastic Conference Division I)
How they arrived here: Webster Schroeder (No. 7 in NYSSWA Class AA) opened sectionals with a 3-0 quarterfinals win over No. 7 seed Rush-Henrietta and advanced past No. 3 seed Brighton, 2-0, in the semifinals before defeating No. 5 seed Hilton 3-0 in the championship match as Abby Herbst scored the game winner. Clarence (No. 2 in NYSSWA Class AA) began sectionals with a 8-0 victory over No. 8 seed Niagara Falls and followed that up with a 1-0 win over No. 4 Frontier. They defeated No. 2 Lancaster in the championship 1-0, avenging their only loss of the season, via a game winner from Jolie Brady.

Trends: Webster Schroeder is unbeaten in its last nine matches, allowing only two goals in those games. The Warriors began the year with a 6-1-2 mark and allowed just one goal in those nine games. Clarence is on a nine-game winning streak of its own, while also allowing only two goals in that stretch. The Red Devils began the year with nine straight wins.

Class A: Saturday, November 5, 4 PM at Niagara-Wheatfield High School
Section V Class A Champion SPENCERPORT RANGERS (16-1-2 overall / Monroe County Division 2)
vs.
Section VI Class A Champion WILLIAMSVILLE EAST FLAMES (15-2 overall / Erie County Interscholastic Conference Division II)
How they arrived here: Spencerport (No. 6 in NYSSWA Class A) opened with a 9-0 first-round victory over No. 15 seed Eastridge and notched 2-0 wins over No. 7 seed Our Lady of Mercy and No. 3 seed Greece Athena. The Rangers shutout No. 4 seed Churchville-Chili 2-0 to win their seventh consecutive sectional championship with Lindsay Lehnhard scoring the game winning goal. Williamsville East (No. 9 in NYSSWA Class A) defeated No. 9 Hamburg 3-0 in the first round and then beat No. 5 Amherst 3-1 to advance to the finals. They too shutout their finals opponent, No. 2 seed Niagara-Wheatfield, by a score of 1-0 as Emily Woolingham netted the game winner to capture the championship.

Trends: Spencerport is unbeaten in its last 15 matches, posting ten shutouts over that stretch; the Rangers have shut out their last five opponents allowing one goal in their last eight contests. Williamsville East is 11-1 in its last twelve games, losing only to Section Six Class AA Champion Clarence. The Flames have been hot over that period, averaging over six goals per game.

What’s at stake: A spot in the NYS Class A semifinals against the Columbia (2) vs. New Hartford (3) winner. New Hartford is ranked No. 1 in the NYSSWA Class A poll while Columbia is No. 8.
Class B: Saturday, November 5, 1:30 PM at Niagara-Wheatfield High School
Section V Class B2 champion HAVERLING RAMS (20-0 overall / Livingston Division 1)
vs.
Section VI Class B1 champion LEWISTON-PORTER Lancers (14-4 overall / Niagara Frontier)
How they arrived here: Haverling (No. 5 in NYSSWA Class B) started the postseason with an 8-0 win over No. 8 seed Attica. The Rams then went on to beat No. 5 LeRoy 4-1 and Hornell 3-2, garnering their third straight B2 title with Keegan Smith scoring the game winning goal. Haverling then shutout the No. 1 seed in the B1 tournament and B1 sectional champion Palmyra-Macedon 1-0 in the Class B qualifier game to earn a place in the Far West Regional. Lewiston-Porter (No. 13 in NYSSWA Class B) also opened its sectional run with a first round 8-0 win over No. 7 Olean and then defeated No. 3 seed Pioneer 4-2 to reach the finals of the B1 sectional tournament. Lewiston-Porter beat No. 1 seed City Honors 4-0 in the Section Six Class B1 championship match. The Lancers then cruised to a 7-0 victory over Section Six Class B2 champ Fredonia in the regional qualifier game.

Trends: The Haverling win over Pal-Mac earned the Rams their first trip in school history to the Far West Regional (state quarterfinals). Haverling is on a twenty game win streak and only four of those victories have been by one goal; all the rest have been by three goals or more. Lewiston-Porter is returning to the Far West Regional for the second straight year after making it all the way to the NYSPHSAA Class B final in 2021 before dropping a 2-0 match to Bronxville. L-P comes in riding a ten-game win streak of its own.

Players to Watch for Lewiston-Porter: Sophia Auer Sr. F/M 39 goals, 22 assists; Elina Kunik Jr. M 19 goals, 19 assists; Jordan Niccola Sr. M 13 goals, 14 assists; Logan Monteleone Sr. M ten goals, seven assists; Emily Stefik So. D/M eight goals, five assists; Rebecca Hoffman Sr. GK 37 saves, 23 goals allowed, 904 minutes played; Kayla Mang Sr. GK 45 saves, 13 goals allowed, 570 minutes played.

What’s at stake: A spot in the NYS Class B semifinals against the Westhill (3) vs Saranac (7) winner. Westhill is No. 4 in the NYSSWA Class B poll while Saranac is No. 7.
Class C: Saturday, November 5, 11 AM at Niagara-Wheatfield High School
Section V Class C2 Champion BYRON-BERGEN BEES (21-0 overall / Genesee Region Division 2)
vs.
Section VI Class C Champion FREWSBURG BEARS (18-0 overall Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association West 2)
How they arrived here: Byron-Bergen (No. 2 in NYSSWA Class AA ) started with wins over No. 16 seed Perry and No. 8 Cuba Rushford/Hinsdale before beating No. 4 seed Warsaw, 6-0 and Wheatland-Chili, 2-0 for a second straight C2 title. The Bees then took on Section V Class C1 Champ Gananda in the regional qualifier and prevailed 3-2 on a ‘Golden’ Goal by Mia Gray; it marked Gray’s second straight game winner. Frewsburg (No. 6 in NYSSWA Class AA) started off its playoffs with an 8-0 win over No. 6 Randolph and followed that up with a 5-0 victory over No. 2 Portville. The Bears won their second straight sectional title against No. 1 seeded Wilson on the strength of a 3-2 victory as Taytum Jimerson scored the game winner. The Bears had beaten Wilson 1-0 in 2021 for the title.

Trends: Both teams are undefeated coming into the match and have only allowed eight goals combined in their 39 games played. Both Byron-Bergen and Frewsburg have won 16 games by two or more goals. Byron-Bergen has posted 18 shutouts, while Frewsburg has 16.

Players to Watch for Frewsburg: Ava Jimerson So. 28 goals, 20 assists; Alexandra Hultberg Sr. 26 goals, 26 assists; Kaydan Bush Sr. 14 goals, seven assists; Ashlyn Samuelson Sr. ten goals, three assists; Taytum Jimerson So. M eight goals, eleven assists; Braelyn Stelmack Jr. GK 26 saves, three goals allowed, 1,176 minutes played.
Let’s Play it Again: This is a rematch of the 2021 Far West Regional where Byron-Bergen prevailed 1-0 on a goal by current team member Ava Gray.

What’s at stake: A spot in the NYS Class C semifinals against the Sauquoit Valley (3) vs. Watkins Glen (4) winner. Sauquoit Valley is ranked No. 3 in the NYSSWA Class C poll while Watkins Glen is No. 9.
Class D: Friday, November 4, 5 PM at Niagara Wheatfield High School
Section V Class D1 Champion KESHEQUA INDIANS (14-6-0 overall / Livingston Division 3)
vs.
Section VI Class D Champion ELLICOTTVILLE EAGLES (12-6 overall / Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association West 2)
How they arrived here: Keshequa (No. 4 in NYSSWA Class D) entered sectionals as the No. 5 seed in the Section V Class D1 tournament and they proceeded to beat three straight higher-seeded opponents. The Indians opened with a 4-0 win over No. 4 Avoca/Prattsburgh and followed that up with an overtime victory (Libby Brenner with Golden Goal) over No. 1 Fillmore. Keshequa’s 2-1 win over Genesee Valley/Belfast was also in overtime (Ava Thayer with Golden Goal), earning Keshequa its fourth title in the last twelve years. Ellicottville (No. 9 in NYSSWA Class D) started sectionals as the No. 1 seed and defeated No. 4 Frankville 3-0 and then beat No. 2 North Collins 1-0 for the title. Layla Kerns scored the game winner for the Eagles. The title gave Ellicotville back-to-back championships as they also beat North Collins in the 2021 Class D final.

Trends: Keshequa has posted nine shutouts this season and five of its six losses were by one goal. Eight times this season the Indians have collected three or more goals in a game. Ellicotville enters the Far West Regional on a seven-game winning streak and has allowed more than one goal just once over that stretch. The Eagles are 12-1 since starting the year 0-5 after playing higher classification competition.
