Gananda and Holley to face for C1 title

Wayne County meets Genesee Region with the Section V Girls’ Class C1 title up for grabs. Gananda and Holley will square off on Friday for the championship. Here’s what you need to know:

No. 1 seed GANANDA BLUE PANTHERS (19-0-0/Wayne County) vs. No. 3 seed HOLLEY HAWKS (16-2-1/Genesee Region I)

How they got here: Gananda (No. 5 NYSSWA Class C) began its title quest beating No. 16 seed Sodus and followed that with a quarterfinal win over No. 8 Williamson 3-0. The Blue Panthers qualified for the championship match with a 2-0 victory over 15-win, No. 4 seed Marcus Whitman, 2-0. Holley (No. 18 NYSSWA Class C) defeated No. 14 seed Alexander and No. 11 York/Pavilion by a combined score of 11-0, and then hung on against Geneseo 2-1 to reach the final.

Total goals scored: Gananda (104), Holley (88)

Total goals allowed: Gananda (9), Holley (23)

Trends: Gananda has been on a dominant defensive stretch having not allowed a goal in seven games. Holley is looking for its tenth straight win going into this title match.

Players to Watch for Gananda: Isabella Hoffmann So. M/F 32 goals, 16 assists; Ella Lathrop So. M/F 25 goals, 18 assists; Nicole Cruz Jr. M/F 17 goals, ten assists; Lyndsey Valletta Sr. GK/F 72 saves, eight goals allowed, 1492 minutes in goal; Katie Rothwell Jr. D/M seven goals, ten assists; Aly Cruz So. M/F six goals, three assists; Nyah Cruz Jr. Center Back one goal, two assists.

Holley: Samantha Bates Jr. M/F 37 goals, 12 assists; Emma Brady Jr. M 16 goals, 14 assists; Layne Walker Jr. GK/M 59 saves, 23 allowed, 1446 minutes in goal; Jailyn Bishop Jr. D/M 10 goals, 16 assists; Isabella Thom Jr. D/M six goals, eight assists; Caitlin Dobri Jr. D/M seven goals, two assists.

Coaches: Emily Slentz (Gananda), Renee Wolf (Holley)

History 101: Gananda will be vying for its first sectional title in program history. Holley is looking for its third sectional title and first since the C2 championship in 1994.

What’s next: The winner will face either Byron-Bergen or Wheatland in the Class C regional qualifier.

A 5:00 p.m. kickoff is scheduled Friday at Webster Thomas High School.
