Brighton’s Tozin claims third straight A1 title

HILTON, N.Y. — Despite a rain delay and colder than normal temperatures, Section V Girls tennis completed its individual sectionals tournament play on Saturday.

In Class A1 Singles, Leyla Tozin (Brighton) defeated Cassie Spencer (Webster Thomas) 6-0, 6-0 in the sectional finals. Tozin won all of her matches and did not give up one game in her quest to win a third consecutive sectional singles title.

In Class A1 Doubles, Brighton’s Elizabeth Norris and Kylie Mariano clinched the sectional doubles title for the second year in a row defeating Victor’s Natalie Pipes and Meghan Abbott in the finals 6-1, 6-0.

Tozin and Spencer earned spots in the state qualifier along with Ella Hall (Brighton) and Samantha Rava (Fairport).

Teams Norris/Mariano and Pipes/Abbott earned spots for the doubles state qualifier, as well as Samantha Kotz/Olivia Rizzo (Brighton) and Catherine Ginther/Morgan Spath (Victor).

In Class A2 Singles, Omika Patel (Pittsford Mendon) defeated Minjee Kim (Pittsford Sutherland) 6-0, 3-0 (retired due to injury) to win her first sectional singles title.

The Class A2 Doubles tournament saw both the semifinals and finals matches pushed to tie-breakers. Mercy’s Ava Hartzell and Caroline Fitzsimmons defeated Mendon’s Jenny Zhao and Jessica Yao in the semifinal match 7-6 (7-5 tie-break), 6-4.

Hartzell and Fitzsimmons’s quest for a championship win was not any easier in their finals match against the Pittsford Sutherland team of Shushu Wu and Michelle Han. The nail-biter of a match ended when Hartzell/Fitzsimmons finally defeated Wu/Han 5-7, 7-5, 7-6 (7-5 tie-break) for their first sectional doubles title.

Class A2 state qualifiers for singles include finalists Patel and Kim, as well as Eshal Mobeen (Pittsford Mendon) and Philiasophia Wood (Brockport). Qualifiers in doubles include Hartzell/Fitzsimmons and Wu/Han, as well as Jenny Zhao/Jessica Yao (Pittsford Mendon) and Sophie Khan/Vasu Jaligama (Pittsford Mendon).

Sophia Carling (HAC) claimed the Class B1 championship with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over JoAnn Catalano (Sodus).

Scout Porschet & Payce Chu-Lustig (Geneva) defeated Hazel Jokl & Ava Youngblut (HF-L) 2-6, 6-2, 6-4 for the B1 doubles title.

Carling and Catalano will compete in the singles state qualifier along with Maddy Langley (HF-L) and Amber Paynter (Geneva).

Porschet and Chu-Lustig will compete in the doubles qualifier along with Jokl/Youngblut, Rachael Garvey & Anella Tillman (Penn Yan) and Leah Redding & Holly Marriott (Mynderse).

For the second consecutive year, Larisa Kotok (Marion Gananda) faced Olivia Chiu (Fillmore) in the Class B2 singles championship final. Kotok defeated Chiu 6-0, 6-0 to earn her second consecutive singles title. Kotok, like Tozin (from Class A1), did not lose a game during the tournament. Last year Kotok was the runner up at the Individual State Championship Singles tournament losing to Section XI champion Kady Tannenbaum in the finals. 

Camryn Moore & Genevieve Dabby (Avoca/Prattsburgh) beat Madison Secor & Olivia Geil (Clyde Savannah) in the Class B2 Doubles Championship, 6-3, 6-2.

Other players earning a spot for the Individual State Qualifiers include:

Singles- Samantha Bidzerkowny (Wellsville)

Singles- Candy Zhou (Alfred Almond)

Doubles- Kloey Babcock & Kiera Seely (Marcus Whitman)

Doubles- Kendra Stowell & Zoey Pittman (Lyons)

State qualifiers will be held at Mendon Racquet Club on October 19th and 20th as Class A and Class B compete for an opportunity reach the New York State Tournament on October 27th-29th in Schenectady.
