BRIGHTON, N.Y.– Gavin Parks led Brighton with a two-touchdown performance as the Bruins defeated Churchville-Chili, 21-14 on Friday evening.
Parks spearheaded the Bruins’ rushing attack with 155 yards on 22 rush attempts and two scores.
“He’s a special kid,” Brighton head coach Steve Lian said of the sophomore’s performance. “We knew that going back to when he was playing youth football. I’ve seen him play since he was a little kid. We’ve known he’s special. He works hard in the offseason. Passionate kid. Dynamic. We’re really happy with how he’s doing.”
Brighton opened the contest with a 14-play, 63-yard drive. Parks had his first rushing touchdown from 11 yards out to end the drive.
The Bruins ended the first quarter with Parks scoring from one-yard out. The drive took nine plays and three minutes.
Brighton didn’t find the end zone until the third quarter when Alex Miller scored a rushing touchdown from one yard out to give the Bruins a three-score lead past the halfway mark in the third quarter.
Tyler Martinovich threw for 56 yards on 11 passing attempts. Brighton’s leading receiver was tight end Thomas Welker who had a 32-yard reception.

On the defensive side of the ball for Brighton, Alex Miller finished with five tackles, a sack and a forced fumble. Welker had three tackles and two sacks. Carmello Miranda recovered a fumble early in the third quarter.
“I thought our defense played well, overall, they were physical, but a lot of mental mistakes that we need to clean up,” Lian stated about his defense’s performance.
The offensive leaders for Churchville-Chili were quarterback Chase Shepanski who had touchdown passes to Joshua Campbell and Brock Osborne.
Churchville made a push late in the third quarter and into the fourth quarter. Shepanski hit Campbell from 18 yards out with four seconds remaining in the third quarter to make it a two-score lead. Shepanski found Osborne in the end zone from 25 yards out to cut it to a one-score with 39 seconds to go in the game.
On the defensive side for Churchville, Joaquan Thomas and Ricardo Lagares both recovered fumbles for the Saints.
Churchville-Chili will play next Friday, October 7 at home against Webster Thomas.
Brighton goes on the road on October 7 to take on Spencerport.
