Section V Softball Championship Preview

Section V Softball will crown nine champions on Saturday. Games will be played at four different sites starting at 11 a.m. Here is the breakdown for each game:

CLASS AA
NO. 1 FAIRPORT RED RAIDERS (16-5-0/Monroe County Division I)
vs.
NO. 2 VICTOR BLUE DEVILS (14-6-0/ Monroe County Division I)
11:00 AM Greece Odyssey

How they arrived here: Top-seeded Fairport defeated No. 5 Penfield, 3-2 in the semifinals. Victor beat No. 7 Greece in the quarterfinals and No. 3 Rush-Henrietta in the seifinals, 5-0 to reach Saturday’s championship game.

Tempo and Trends: Fairport scores seven runs per game while allowing 2.8. The Red Raiders have won four consecutive games after dropping three straight in early May. Victor enters play having won five of its last six outings. The Blue Devils average 8.3 runs per game while limiting opponents to 4.2 runs. Victor has scored in double figures eight times this season including three double-digit outputs in the past six games.

What’s at Stake: A spot in the NYS Far West Regional against the Section VI champion.

History 101: Fairport defeated Victor in last year’s AA semifinal. Fairport went on to lose to Webster Schroeder in the finals. Victor won consecutive titles from 2017 to 2019. The Red Raiders are looking for their first title since 2012.

Players to Watch for Fairport: Nicole Allen So. CF; Cecelia Byrne Sr. P; Julianna Haus Sr. C; Morgan Kennedy Sr. SS and Amanda Linnenbrink Jr. P.

Victor: Renee Carnevale So. 1B; Rachel Gill Jr. C; Joelle Jay So. 2B; Marissa Mancini Jr. 3B and Carrie Sidare So. P.

CLASS A1
NO. 1 WEBSTER SCHROEDER WARRIORS (17-5-0/Monroe County Division I)
vs.
NO. 2 WEBSTER THOMAS TITANS (17-5-0/ Monroe County Division II)
5:00 PM Greece Odyssey

How they arrived here: Top-seeded Webster Schroeder defeated No. 9 Greece Arcadia in the quarterfinals before beating reigning champion, No. 4 Brighton in the semifinals. Webster Thomas beat No. 10 Our Lady of Mercy in the quarterfinals and No. 6 Bishop Kearney to reach Saturday’s championship.

Tempo and Trends: Webster Schroeder has won nine straight games. The Warriors score 8.8 runs per game while holding opponents to 1.95 tallies. Schroeder has scored in double figures eight times this year and has only been held scoreless on two occasions. Thomas was responsible for one of those shutouts when the Titans beat their crosstown rivals, 1-0 on April 26th. Thomas has won five straight and 14 of 15. The Titans score 7.5 while allowing 2.6 runs per game and have shut out their opponents on eight occasions this season. Thomas started the season with one win in its first four games.

What’s at Stake: A spot in the NYS Far West Regional qualifier against the Class A2 champion.

History 101: Schroeder won the Class AA title in 2021 and is looking for its third sectional title since 2016. Thomas advanced to the A1 finals a year ago.

Webster Thomas: Anna Bello Jr. C; Emma Bello Jr. P; Mary Marrapese Sr. 1B and Rose Nicastro Sr. P.

CLASS A2
NO. 1 PITTSFORD MENDON VIKINGS (16-4-0/Monroe County Division III)
vs.
NO. 2 PITTSFORD SUTHERLAND KNIGHTS (17-5-0/ Monroe County Division IV)
2:00 PM Greece Odyssey

How they arrived here: Top-seeded Pittsford Mendon defeated No. 8 Eastridge in the quarterfinals and No. 5 Honeoye Falls-Lima in the semifinals to reach Saturday’s championship game. Sutherland downed No. 7 East in the quarterfinals and No. 3 Wayne to reach the finals.

Tempo and Trends: Mendon has won five consecutive and 10 of 11. Half of those 10 recent wins have been by shutout. The Vikings have blanked opponents on 10 occasions average 5.3 runs while limiting opponents to 1.6 runs per game. Sutherland has won three in a row and seven of its last eight games. The Knights scored 8.5 runs while 3.5 per game.

What’s at Stake: A spot in the NYS Far West Regional qualifier against the Class A1 champion.

History 101: Mendon last reached the finals in 2018. The Vikings most recent sectional title came in 2016. Sutherland advanced to A2 finals a year ago. The Knights won the A2 crown in 2018.

Players to Watch for Pittsford Mendon: Mary Ciaccio Sr. SS; Emma Giordano Jr. 3B; Lilly Goldberg So. P; Greta Marino So OF.

Pittsford Sutherland: Riley Gonzalez Sr. 3B; Petra Hunt 7th-grade UTL; Julianna Lyons Jr. UTL and Maddy Ward Jr. P.

Coaches: Scott Parson (Pittsford Mendon), Mike Scialo (Pittsford Sutherland)

CLASS B1
No. 2WATERLOO INDIANS (15-7/FINGER LAKES EAST)
vs.
No. 1 BATAVIA BLUE DEVILS (14-7/MONROE COUNTY Division IV)
11:00 AM Webster Schroeder

How they arrived here: No. 2 seed, Waterloo beat No. 7 Aquinas in the quarterfinals and then knocked off No. 6 Palmyra -Macedon in the semi-finals, to earn a trip to the finals. Top-seeded Batavia beat No. 8 Geneva in the quarterfinals and held on to defeat No. 4 Hornell (4-3) in the semifinals to earn a finals berth.

Tempo and Trends: Waterloo averages 10.3 runs per gam while allowing an average of 3.4 runs per game. The Indians have outscored their opponents 33-3 in two playoff wins. Batavia averages 9.0 runs per game while allowing an average of 5.0 runs. The Blue Devils have outscored their opponents 22-6 in two playoff wins.

What’s at Stake: A spot in the NYS Class B regional qualifier.

Players to watch for Waterloo: Makayla Jensen Sr. P; Maya Brinkman  Jr. UTL; Brynn Rogers Jr. UTL;  Kennedy Beniamino 9th-grade UTL and Madison Westerberg 9th-grade IF.

Batavia: Giana Mruczek So. P; Lyndsey Grazioplene Jr. C; Libby Grazioplene 9th-grade, 2B; Hannah Carney 9th-grade C and Julia Clark So, SS.

CLASS B2
No. 2 HAVERLING RAMS (15-3/LIVINGSTON COUNTY)
vs.
No. 1 WELLSVILLE LIONS (18-3/INDEPENDENT)

How they arrived here: No. 2 Haverling earned back-to-back shutouts of No. 7 Attica (8-0) in the quarterfinals and No. 3 Penn Yan (5-0) in the semifinals on their way to the finals. No. 1 Wellsville defeated No. 9 Dansville in the quarterfinals and No. 4 Mynderse in the semifinals, to earn a finals berth.

Tempo and Trends: Haverling averages 8.9 runs per game while allowing on average, 2.6 runs. The Rams have won 11 straight heading into Saturday’s championship and have outscored their opponents 114 to 22 during that stretch.  Wellsville averages 11.2 runs and has allowed an average of 1.7 runs per game. The Lions have won 16 of their last 17 games (including playoffs) and have outscored opponents 191 to 31, recording 7 shutouts.

What’s at Stake: A spot in the NYS Class B regional qualifier.

Players to watch for Haverling: Leeah McNally Sr. UTL; Madison Coots So. CF; Kaili Witherall 9th-grade, P; Caydence Spears 9th-grade, C;  Kansas Knight Sr. UTL.

Wellsville: Brazen Beckwith So. UTL;  Mackenzie Cowburn So. P/UTL;  Makenna Dunbar 9th-grade UTL; Lindsay Stuck 9th-grade, UTL and Sawyer Burke So. UTL.

CLASS C1

No. 2 seed BLOOMFIELD BOMBERS (21-0/Finger Lakes West)

No. 1 seed AVON BRAVES (17-1/Livingston County)

How they arrived here: Bloomfield defeated No. 7 seed Alexander 8-2, and No. 3 seed Williamson 8-0. Avon beat No. 8 seed Marion/Gananda 14-0, and No. 5 seed Addison 1-0.

What’s at stake: A spot in the NYS Class C regional qualifier.

History 101: Avon defeated Bloomfield 10-0 in the Section V C1 finals last year.

Players to Watch for Bloomfield: Calla McCombs, Ashlyn Wright, Abby O’Brien, Brianna Leitten and Sofie Kachmaryk.

Players to Watch for Avon: Joliegh Crye, Jessie Crye and Courtney Yencer.

Coaches: Jill Terry (Avon), Mark Jacobs (Bloomfield)

CLASS C2

No. 2 seed PEMBROKE DRAGONS (11-6/Genesee Region)
vs.
No. 1 seed OAKFIELD-ALABAMA HORNETS (13-4/Genesee Region)

2:00 PM Honeoye Falls-Lima

How they got here: Pembroke defeated No. 7 seed Campbell-Savona 1-0, and No. 3 seed Kendall 6-2. Oakfield-Alabama beat No. 9 seed Cuba-Rushford 12-4, and No. 5 seed South Seneca/Romulus 17-2.

What’s at stake: A spot in the NYS Class C regional qualifier.

History 101: Pembroke lost in the 2021 C1 semi-finals to Bloomfield, 4-3. Oakfield Alabama’s last Section V softball title came in 2011.

Players to Watch for Pembroke: Jackie Neurater, Aleena Maynard and Allie Schwerthoffer.

Players to Watch for Oakfield-Alabama: Caitlin Ryan and McKenna Reading.

Coaches: Jeff Schlagenhauf (Oakfield-Alabama), JC Kabel (Pembroke).

CLASS C3

No. 3 seed BOLIVAR-RICHBURG WOLVERINES (19-1/Allegany)
vs.
No. 1 seed LYNDONVILLE TIGERS (20-0/Genesee Region)

5:00 PM Honeoye Falls-Lima

How they arrived here: Bolivar-Richburg took down No. 6 seed Harley-Allendale-Columbia 6-0, and No. 2 seed Keshequa 5-1. Lyndonville beat No. 8 seed Notre Dame-Batavia 7-2, and No. 5 seed Dundee/Bradford 10-1.

What’s at stake: A spot in the NYS Class C regional qualifier.

History 101: Bolivar-Richburg is coming off a 2021 C2 Section V championship, and also won in 2014 and 2010. Lyndonville lost in the 2021 C2 championship to Bolivar-Richburg, 9-7.

Players to Watch for Bolivar-Richburg: Jessica Majot, McKinlee Harris and Madeline Thornton.

Players to Watch for Lyndonville: Haley Shaffer, Addie Dillenbeck and Gracie Johnson.

Coaches: Brooke Lovell (Bolivar-Richburg), Joe Moore (Lyndonville)

CLASS D
No. 2 SCIO/FRIENDSHIP (15-4/ALLEGANY COUNTY)
vs.
No. 1 HONEOYE BULLDOGS (17-4/FINGER LAKES WEST)
5:00 PM

How they arrived here: Scio/Friendship collected back-to-back shutouts, beating No. 7 Avoca-Prattsburgh (6-0) in the quarterfinals and No. 3 C.G. Finney (9-0) in the semi-finals. No. 1 Honeoye beat No. 8 Belfast/Genesee Valley (4-3) in the quarterfinals, and got past No. 4 Fillmore (14-3) in the semi-finals, to earn a place in the finals.

Tempo and Trends: Scio/Friendship averages 8.8 runs while allowing an average of 2.5 runs per game and has won five straight games. with the last three being shutouts. Scio/Friendship has outscored opponents 62-4 during the recent stretch. Honeoye averages 12.6 runs scored while allowing an average of 4.5 runs per game. The Bulldogs have won seven straight (including playoffs), outscoring opponents 99-19 in that stretch.

What’s at stake: A spot in the NYS Far West Regional against the Section VI champion.

Players to watch for Scio/Friendship: Claire Calhoun Jr. UTL; Jaedyn Shields Sr. 1B; Nevaeh Ross Sr. P and Katherine Lamberson Jr. UTL.

Honeoye: Alexis Johnson Jr. P/IF, Alexa Colon Jr. INF;  Ava Higgins So. INF;  Clare Griffin Jr. OF and Lindsey Higley So. UTL.

Coaches: Brooke Shepherd (Scio/Friendship), Randy Yale (Honeoye)
