SUNY Geneseo senior catcher Katherine Hayes ripped four hits over the course of two games as the Knights earned another conference sweep, defeating Fredonia in consecutive games. The Knights celebrated Senior Day, honoring the Class of 2022 in a pre-game ceremony. Seniors Phoebe Elardo, Katherine Hayes, Mattie Klein, Alexandra Koutsogiannis and Taylor Riccardi were reach recognized.
GAME ONE – GENESEO 4, Fredonia 3
- Fredonia jumped ahead with a run in the top of the first inning, but sophomore Lauren Kersch worked out of a jam to limit the damage to one run.
- Geneseo tied the game in the fourth inning when Audrey Minton doubled home Kaitlyn Schmitz. The Knights gained the lead when Taylor Riccardi hit an RBI single in the fifth, taking a 2-1 advantage.
- Fredonia jumped ahead, 3-2, with two runs in the top of the sixth. In the bottom of the frame, Leah VanDerwarker and Rebecca Schwartz drove back-to-back RBI doubles to the fence, helping the Knights regain the lead, 4-3. Kersch retired the final three batters of the game to clinch the victory.
GAME TWO – GENESEO 8, Fredonia 0 (6 Innings)
- Geneseo opened the scoring with four runs in the bottom of the second inning. Sophomore Sydney Bolton knocked in a run before Hayes hit an RBI double, Samantha Martz and VanDerwarker each hit RBI singles to make it 4-0.
- Schwartz drove in Martz with an RBI double in the fourth inning to make it 5-0 before the Knights plated three more runs in the sixth to walk off with an 8-0 victory.
- Schmitz twirled six scoreless innings, allowing just four hits and ringing up three strikeouts to earn the pitching victory.
QUICK FACTS
- The Knights recorded 11 extra-base hits, with six doubles and two triples in game one and three more doubles in game two. Schwartz and Hayes each finished with three doubles apiece while VanDerwarker hit a double and a triple.
- VanDerwarker led the team with three RBI while Martz and Schwartz each drove in two runs.
- Geneseo improved to 25-3 on the season, reaching 25 wins in a single season for the third time since 2018 and the fifth time since 2015.
