A Finger Lakes East team and an Independent are looking for a spot in the NYS Boys’ Class B Far West Regional. Section V Class B1 champion Newark will face Class B2 champ Wellsville Wednesday night at Penn Yan. Here’s the breakdown:
NEWARK REDS (17-6/Finger Lakes East) vs. WELLSVILLE LIONS (14-8/Allegany, Independent)
Scoring offense: Newark (56.5 PPG), Wellsville (57.8 PPG)
Scoring defense: Newark (47.6 PAPG), Wellsville (46.7 PAPG)

Current streak: Newark has won nine straight, and five of nine being double-digit victories. Wellsville has won four straight, and eight of its last nine. The Lions have scored 60 or more points in seven of their last nine.
How they arrived here: Newark opened sectionals with an 60-40 victory over No. 7 seed Geneva in the quarterfinals. The Reds knocked off third-seeded Greece Olympia, 46-43 in the semi-finals before beating No. 4 Palmyra-Macedon, 40-37 to claim the Class B1 title. Wellsville defeated No. 5 Penn Yan 65-53 in the B2 quarterfinals and Dansville, 60-52 in the semifinals. The Lions claimed their fourth sectional title in the past seven years with a 66-58 victory over third-seeded Mynderse.

History 101: Newark is looking to make its ninth regional appearance. The Reds are 4-4 in the previous efforts. The Lions last played in the Class B Regional game in 2016, and lost 50-34 to Olean. Wellsville beat Newark in the 2016 Class B regional qualifier, 62-47.
What’s at stake: A spot in the NYS Class B Far West Regional against the Section VI representative (Olean or Allegany-Limestone).
A 6 p.m. tipoff is scheduled Wednesday night at Penn Yan High School.
