Jason Gibbs dropped 13 of his game-high 27 points in the fourth quarter. Churchville was down by one going into the last stanza and Gibbs’s 13 points led them to a double-figure lead. The junior captain went 12 for 13 in foul shots and sunk seven field goals including one 3-pointer. Teammate Ricardo Lagares added seven of his 16 points in the fourth quarter. Arcadia’s captain Gabe Taylor dropped 13 points in the first half and ended with a game total of 19. Latrell Rowe added 15 points but the two could not hold off the Saints. Churchville advances to the sectional quarterfinals where it will compete against the No. 1 seed, Pittsford Mendon, on Friday at 5 p.m. at Pittsford Mendon High School. Midway through the second quarter of Wednesday’s Section V Class A1 first-round game, Dave Tisa called timeout to remind his Brighton boys’ basketball team that the best player on the court was sitting there in the Bruins’ huddle. Less than six minutes of game time later, Tisa’s squad had a 34-18 lead. And Brighton sophomore Reggie Smith, Jr. was the centerpiece of the decisive 16-0 run. READ MORE.

All five Athena starters scored in double figures as the Trojans led from start to finish and moved into the quarterfinal round to meet Webster Schroeder. Khorie Reaves scored six of his 15 points during an 8-0 run to start the second quarter as the Trojans gained separation. The game went to the half 38-28. Athena used its trapping defense and quick ball movement to create a number of open shooting opportunities early in the second half, putting together an 11-3 run to extend the lead to 18. In the fourth, Athena took its largest lead of 21 points, but Ty Heaton fueled a 16-3 Rangers’s run with back-to-back treys to pull within eight with under three minutes to go. Athena scored the last six points of the game for the final margin. Khorie Reaves and Izaiah Stewart led the Trojans with 15 apiece, while Frankie Oropeza and Jahon Jones both had 14. James Reaves, Jr. finished with 12. For the Rangers, Bryon Streb finished with 20. Justin Bryant had 17 and Heaton had 11. Saturday’s game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. tip-off at Webster Schroeder High School.

Richie Nadal dropped 13 of his 18 points in the second half when SOTA battled out a small 4-point victory. Nadal went eight for ten on his foul shots and dropped an additional five field goals. Sophomore and Captain, Sam Howland, accounted for 16 points including two three-pointers. Co-captain, Keshaun Chatman scored 15 points and six of those were in the final quarter where SOTA pulled away. NE Douglass sophomore, Chrishton Wester put up 18 points including four threes from behind the arc. Wester’s teammate, Roberto Echevarria had 14 for the Panthers. All five Brockport starters contributed double figures for the Blue Devils. Bryce Tyndell dropped 14 points and made it a double-double by grabbing 10 rebounds. Teammate Nate Grego scored 13 points and had 9 rebounds and 5 assists for the Blue Devils. Juniors Peter Leicht, and Francis Nwokonko had 12 points each. Cooper Hassall finished with 10 points. Every starter attributed points in the fourth quarter where they took the lead over Wilson and eventually came out with a 15-point win. Brockport advances to the sectional quarterfinal and will compete against the No. 2 seed, East, on Saturday at 7 p.m. at East High.

Jahmere Kirkland scored 10 of his 17 points in the fourth quarter as No. 11 Leadership Academy held off a late rally to defeat No. 6 Monroe. Kirkland’s 3-pointer, his second of the game, with less than two minutes remaining in the game, helped the Lions pull away from a one-possession game. READ MORE.

Captain Carter McFollins poured in a game-high of 24 points and in the third quarter when Batavia almost doubled its ten-point lead, McFollins had five points. Javin McFollins scored 17 points including four 3-pointers. Livonia’s guard, Connor Feehan, had 14 points and his teammate, Chris Coyle, scored 13 points. After the third quarter, the two could not rally as Batavia took a 48-31 lead going into the final stanza. Batavia advances to the sectional quarterfinals where they will compete against the No. 1 seed, Northstar Christian, on Saturday at 7 p.m. at Northstar Christian Academy.

Paul Goodness accounted for seven of his game-high 18 points in the first quarter when Pal-Mac created a 30-8 lead going into the second quarter. Goodness also scored five field goals including a three-pointer in the following quarters. Teammate and brother, Ian Goodness contributed as well as he added nine points including one from behind the arc in the first stanza. The junior guard ended the game with 15 points. Rochester Prep players, Jami Walker, and Kyrell Shaw each dropped 12 points for the Tigers, but it was not enough to close the 59-44 advantage Pal-Mac made going into the final quarter. Pal-Mac will advance to the sectional quarterfinals where they will compete against the No. 5 seed, Hornell, on Saturday. The time is TBD. Gerod Jackson dropped nine of his 19 points in the first half where Vertus took a 48-22 lead over Way-Co. Jackson scored his nine points by hitting three 3-pointers. Teammate and co-captain Tajmeik Hawkins scored 13 of his 15 points in the first half as well, including an additional three 3-pointers. Sophomore Reginald Pough had a double-double for Vertus as he sunk 13 points and grabbed 17 rebounds. Daymeir Cain, captain for Vertus, scored six points, dished out six assists, and grabbed 12 rebounds. Way-Co guard, Brogan Cotter scored 16 points. Vertus advances on to the sectional quarterfinal where they will compete against the No. 1 seed, Dansville, on Saturday at 6 p.m. at Dansville High School. The two sophomores combined for 20 points and created a 31-17 lead over North Rose going into the half. Jaeden Adams-Griffin, Umar Richardson, and Yacoub Tarawally all had nine points each for WOIS. Hazell Nickerson and Ava Amorese both scored 12 points. Amorese scored ten of her 12 points in the third quarter when Cal-Mum was able to stretch its lead by 21 points going into the fourth quarter. The Raiders defense only gave up one bucket in the fourth quarter allowing them to hold on to its large lead. Junior Maddy DeVore had seven points and grabbed 11 rebounds for the Raiders. Senior guard Taylor Mills had five points. Cal-Mum advances to compete against the No. 2 seed, York, on Saturday at 2 p.m. at York High School.

Seventh-grader, Alyssa Marsh, unloaded for 34 points as she led Lima Christian to move on in the sectional tournament. Marsh also had seven steals and five rebounds for the Saints. Teammate and captain, Lillian Herring, dropped 16 points with four assists and four steals. Chloe Gilbert grabbed 10 rebounds and added six points. Genesis Leathersich (4), Kate Somers (3), and Lydia Harrington (2) also scored for Lima.
