Nazareth and St John Fisher men’s basketball teams topped U of R and RIT at Kidera Gymnasium and St John Fisher’s women’s team won on their home court in the Mark’s Pizzeria Crosstown Challenge Tournament, played Thursday and Saturday. Here is a recap of the games:
Thursday – Women
St John Fisher 65, RIT 57 – Claire Kruszka scored 14 points while Miranda Lynch and Leah Koonmen scored 13 each for the Cardinals. Kruszka hit a lay-up at the third quarter buzzer as Fisher made a three-point halftime deficit into a ten-point lead heading into the fourth. Emma Waite scored 24 points to lead RIT.
U of R 80, Nazareth 54 – The Yellowjackets trailed 19-15 after the first quarter but went on a 43-21 run for the next two quarters to pull away. Hannah Lindemuth led U of R with 15 points with Julianna Okoniewski adding 12 points and Kat Jenks 10. Sabrina Wolfe led all scorers with 21 to pace the Golden Flyers.
Saturday – Women
St John Fisher 56, U of R 53 – Kruszka hit a three-pointer with 45 seconds left and Amy Gardner and Kaitlyn Walker hit free throws down the stretch for the Cardinals (4-0). Kruszka finished with a game-high 18 points and Walker with 12. Okoniewski (12) and Linemuth (11) combined for 23 points for the Jackets (4-2).
RIT 72, Nazareth 61 – Kaleesha Joseph erupted for a tournament-high 33 points to lead the Tigers to their first win of the season (1-1). Sydney Pearson contributed 18 to the effort and each had nine rebounds for RIT. Caley Cornwell scored 14 points to lead three Golden Flyers (1-4) in double figures (Wolfe 13, Jadyn Abrams 12).
Thursday – Men
St John Fisher 65, RIT 51 – Preseason All-American Daniel Cook led the Cardinals with 20 points while Brendan Trapper added 13 as Fisher maintained a 14-point halftime lead. Chase Lewis scored 14 points to lead the Tigers and Kris Laing chipped in 10.
Nazareth 81, U of R 73 – Stephen Gabel’s three-point play with 2:04 to play put the Golden Flyers up for good. Gabel scored 20 of his game-high 27 points in the second half and Zach Stenglein added 21 points and nine rebounds. Brian Amabilino Perez paced the Yellowjackets with 15 points.
Saturday – Men
St John Fisher 76, U of R 60 – Cook scored 23 points, Sean Williams 19 and Trapper 14 as Fisher out-scored the Yellowjackets 40-25 in the second half for the Cardinals third straight victory (3-2). Grad student Dan Masino led the U of R with 16 points.
Nazareth 90, RIT 77 – Gabel scored 20 points while Isaac Nelson and Kevin Underwood scored 16 each as the Golden Flyers (4-1) pulled away despite a 32-point effort from RIT’s Kevin Ryan.
