Section V Football Semi-final Preview: Class D

Van Detta Stadium and Avon High School will host the 2021 Section V Class D semi-finals. The tournament opens with a pair of games on Sunday afternoon. Here’s the breakdown:

No. 1 seed  (5-1) OAKFIELD-ALABAMA/ELBA AGGIES vs. No. 4 seed ALEXANDER TROJANS (5-1)

Scoring offense: Oakfield-Alabama/Elba (40.2 PPG), Alexander (21.8 PPG)

Scoring defense: Oakfield-Alabama/Elba (8.7 PPG), Alexander (9 PPG)

Current streak: Oakfield-Alabama/Elba has won two straight games. Alexander has won three consecutive.

Last time they met: These two teams have not met this season.

Players to Watch for Oakfield-Alabama/Elba: Ty Mott Sr. RB, LB 1,383 rushing yards, 20 touchdowns, 36 tackles, 13 tackles for loss, 3 sacks, and one interception; Gaige Armbrewster, Jr. RB, DB, 377 rushing yards, 3 touchdowns, and one interception; Bodie Hyde Fr. QB, 18-of-27, 315 passing yards, 4 touchdowns, 116 rushing yards, and 3 rushing touchdowns; Kaden Cusmano Jr. TE, DE 124 receiving yards, 2 touchdowns, 5 tackles for loss and 3 sacks; Peyton Yasses Sr. OL, LB, 54 tackles (leads team), Dontrell Jenkins Sr. OL, DL, 39 tackles, 7 tackles for loss, and one sack; CJ Gottler Jr. OL, DL, 26 tackles, 6 tackles for loss, and 5 sacks (leads team).

Alexander: Brayden Woods Jr. RB, 455 rushing yards, and four touchdowns; Nick Kramer Jr. 231 passing yards, 2 touchdowns, 379 rushing yards, 4 touchdowns, 19 tackles, 3 sacks (leads team); Devin Dean Sr. LB, 39 tackles (leads team), and 2 sacks; Jay Morrison Sr. WR, DB, 143 receiving yards, one touchdown, 12 tackles, and one interception; Jake Laney Jr. LB, 19 tackles

Coaches: Tyler Winter (Oakfield-Alabama/Elba), Tim Sawyer (Alexander)

History 101: Alexander has made the Class D finals in each of the past four years including two sectional titles coming in 2018 and 2016. Oakfield-Alabama/Elba is the reigning 8-man champion before moving to Class D.

A 1 p.m. kickoff is scheduled at Van Detta Stadium.

No. 2 seed AVON BRAVES (4-1) vs. No. 3 seed CANISTEO-GREENWOOD REDSKINS (5-1)

Scoring offense: Avon (26.8 PPG), Canisteo-Greenwood (28.2PPG)

Scoring defense: Avon (14.9 PPG), Canisteo-Greenwood (10.3 PPG)

Current streak: Avon lost there last game to Oakfield-Alabama/Elba. Canisteo-Greenwood has won two straight

Last time they met: These two teams did not meet in the regular season this year.

Players to Watch for Avon: Roman Volpe Sr. WR, CB; Thomas Welch Jr. RB, S; Michael Rowland Fr. WR and Jaden Courtemanche Sr. WR, CB.

Canisteo-Greenwood: Roque Santiago Sr. QB, DB; Hunter McCaffery Jr. WR, DB; Andrew Morling Sr. WR, DB; Chase Weeks Sr. RB, DB;

Coaches: Andy Englert (Avon), Paul Keeley (Canisteo-Greenwood)

History 101: This is the first semifinal appearance for Avon since 2015 when the Braves lost to Clyde-Savannah. The Braves are seeking their first championship appearance since 2014 when C-G lost to Red Jacket 50-14. Avon last won sectionals in Class D2 during the 2012 season. Canisteo-Greenwood’s last semifinal appearance came in 2018 where it lost to York/Pavilion 12-7.

A 1 p.m. kickoff is scheduled at Avon High School.
