Canisius junior guard Malek Green has been named the Hercules Tires MAAC Player of the Week, the conference office announced on Monday. Green averaged 21.5 points and 7.5 rebounds per game last week for the Golden Griffins in the team’s MAAC series on the road at Fairfield.
Green helped fuel a comeback victory for the Blue and Gold on Feb. 19, as he came off the bench and scored a career-high 29 points to go with nine rebounds in Canisius’ 80-69 win over the Stags. In that game, the Cincinnati, Ohio native hit a career-high 10 field goals, including a career-best four 3-point makes, and he also went 5-for-7 from the free-throw line. Green followed that effort with a team-high 14 points and six boards on Feb. 20, as Canisius saw its five-game win streak come to an end with a 66-53 loss at Fairfield.
For the week, Green, who leads the Griffs and ranks 12th in the MAAC in scoring average and third in the league in rebounds per game, shot 65.2 percent (15-for-23) from the field, 50 percent (4-for-8) from 3-point land and 75 percent (9-for-12) from the free-throw line. With his six rebounds in the loss on Feb. 20, Green extended his streak of grabbing five-or more rebounds to 10 games, making him the first Canisius player in more than 25 seasons to accomplish that feat.
The men’s basketball team will return to action Friday and Saturday (Feb. 26-27), when the squad plays host to Manhattan at the Koessler Athletic Center. Both games are scheduled to start at 7 p.m., with Friday’s game being broadcast live on ESPN+ and Saturday’s contest airing live on ESPN3.
