Ronnie Salcedo’s two-run go-ahead homer in the fifth inning gave the Red Wings a lead they would hold for the rest of the night as their 4-2 victory over the Tidewater Tides on this day in 1988 moved them within one game of the International League title.

Craig Worthington made it a 4-2 ballgame as he doubled in the eighth off Tim Drummond, scoring Steve Finley and giving Rochester a bit of insurance. Keith Hughes initiated scoring with a first inning groundout RBI to drive home Jeff Stone.

Salcedo’s fifth-inning bomb came after Wings manager Johnny Oates told him to drag a bunt on the first pitch or sacrifice on the second. If neither worked, Salcedo was on his own. With a 2-1 count, he lifted the pitch from Tides righty Tom Edens over Silver Stadium’s 345-foot-mark in right field, bringing in Chris Padget who singled to start the inning.

Oates pulled starter Mark Bowden early after he allowed two walks, an RBI single, then another walk to load the bases in the third inning. Mike Griffin took the mound in Bowden’s place, pitching 3.2 innings and earning the win. Curt Brown saved the victory with 2.2 scoreless innings to close the night. Gordie Dillard pitched to one batter in the seventh inning but was replaced immediately when Alan Hayden’s ground ball gave the Tides a second run.

“That’s the guy that hasn’t hurt us all year,” Tides manager Mike Cubbage remarked of Salcedo, who was 3-for-22 against the Tidewater Tides in the regular season. “But in this ballpark, left-handers can step up and hurt you.”

Also On This Day- On September 4, 1976, Red Wings 2b Rich Dauer went 2-for-5 in an 11-6 loss to the Syracuse Sky Chiefs, clinching the International League batting title by one point over Charleston’s Miguel Dilone. Dauer became the 17th IL batting champion in Red Wings history with his .336 batting average… September 4, 2005 – Garrett Jones’s two-run homer capped a four-run eighth inning as Rochester rallied past Ottawa 7-4 on Sunday afternoon at Lynx Stadium. With the Red Wings trailing 4-3, Luis Rivas tied the game with a sacrifice fly and Brian Buchanan gave Rochester the lead with an RBI groundout. Jones followed with his team-high 23rd long ball. Corky Miller went 2-for-4 with a solo homer and two runs scored, while Luis Rodriguez went 2-for-4 with a double and scored twice. Jason Miller (2-0) picked up the win, allowing one run on two hits in two innings.
