The Rochester Red Wings extended their win streak to 10 games after sweeping the Mud Hens in Toledo in a six-hour doubleheader on this day in 1990. Right-hander Mickey Weston held Toledo to four hits and one run, completing all seven innings of the first game, striking out three, and earning his eighth win of the season. Chris Hoiles, an Ohio native who grew up just outside Toledo, hammered solo home runs in the fifth and seventh in a 2-1 Wings win in the opener.
Wings first baseman David Segui took advantage of Toledo third baseman Tim Leiper’s wild throw towards first base and scored the winning in the 13th inning of game two. Segui, who had missed the previous two games due to back injury, kicked off the 13th inning with a double deep to center field, his first hit in 20 at-bats. Joaquin Contreras brought Segui. Marty Brown brought Hoiles with the final run, in a 5-3 victory.
Contreras walked then scored on Shane Turner’s one out double to put Rochester on the board in the second inning. They trailed 3-1. Contreras then doubled in the third, sending Tim Dulin and Hoiles home to tie the game 3-3. Kevin Hickey stepped on the mound in the 12th, closing for the Wings and earning the win. He fanned two, as did relief man Bill McKeon. Starter Dan Boone struck out six Mud Hens over nine innings of work.
The Mud Hens took an early lead in game two when a double from Milt Cuyler and homers from Domingo Michel and Rich Rowland set them up 3-0 in the first inning. Toledo’s one run in the first game came in the fifth as Phil Ouellette batted Tory Lovullo in.

Also On This Day: On July 17, 1971, after a promise by local businessman Morton Brodsky to donate ten dollars for every Red Wings hit and an additional $25 for every home run, Rochester belted sixteen hits and three homers in a 17-4 romp of the Winnipeg Whips at Silver Stadium. The win was Rochester’s 15th in 19 home games since the all-star break… July 17, 2005- Scott Baker allowed two hits and fanned six in eight innings, and Chris Heintz had three hits and knocked in three runs in the Red Wings’s 11-1 win over Durham Sunday. All nine Red Wings got hits, and seven drove in runs in the blowout. After Baker gave up the first inning homer to Young, no one else reached scoring position against him as he got his first win since May 20. Baker had a 3.01 ERA in 16 starts for the Red Wings… July 1933- The Wings are in second place by one-half a game. The Wings won the first game of a doubleheader in Rochester with the Orioles 3-1, but the Orioles came back and trounced the Wings 13-0 in the second.
