Gabel named USBWA Men’s Rochester Player of the Year

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Nazareth College junior Stephen Gabel, has been named Rochester Area NCAA Division II-III Player of the Year by the United States Basketball Writers Association.

A 6-foot-3 guard from Victor, N.Y., Gabel represented the Golden Flyers as one of 12 players named to the first team. Senior guard Cody Green and sophomore forward Jonathan Park were named honorable mention.

Gabel led the Golden Flyers in scoring for 2019-20 with an average of 16.1 points per game. He also averaged 6.8 rebounds per game and knocked down 50 three-point shots. He was recognized as a first-team Empire 8 Conference all-star and twice was honored during the season as E8 Player of the Week.

Green, of Fulton, N.Y., averaged 13.0 points per game with a team-best 77 three-point baskets. He led the Empire 8 in three-point field goal accuracy (77-for-174, .443) and three-pointers made per game (2.9). He recently became the 26th player in Nazareth basketball history to surpass 1,000 points in career scoring and finished his career with 1,122 points. He ranks second all-time with 259 three-point baskets.

Park, of Angola, N.Y., averaged 10.8 points and a conference-best 9.9 rebounds per game. He led the Empire 8 in field goal percentage (131-for-221, .593) and blocked shots (2.1 per game). He twice was honored during the season as E8 Player of the Week.

The Golden Flyers finished 21-6 in 2019-20 with a 12-2 mark in conference play.
