Section V Finals Preview: Boys’ Basketball Class B2

Nick Rowland (13), the oldest of three Rowlands, averages 14 points and 11 rebounds per game for Avon.

Livingston County foes take the court at Blue Cross Arena to decide the Class B2 title. Here’s the breakdown:

No. 1 AVON (15-6/Livingston County II) vs. No. 7 WAYLAND-COHOCTON (12-11/Livingston County II) 11 AM, Saturday, Blue Cross Arena

Scoring offense: Avon (63.45), Wayland-Cohocton (60.15)

Scoring defense: Avon (51.50), Wayland-Cohocton (61.80)

Current streak: Avon has won two straight, Wayland-Cohocton has won three straight.

How they got here: Zack Colvin notched a double-double with 14 points and 21 rebounds as Avon defeated No. 4 Penn Yan, 66-44, in the semifinals.

Wayland-Cohocton knocked off reigning champion No. 3 Wellsville, 54-52, in the semifinals.

Last time they met: Avon won both regular season meetings between the league rivals including a 72-59 decision on February 14.

Players to watch: Avon — Zach Colvin So. F (13.0 PPG, 11.0 RPG); Nick Rowland Sr. F (14.0 PPG, 11.0 RPG); Tyler Dailey Sr. G (10.0 PPG, 3.0 APG); Andrew Rowland 8th grade G (5.0 PPG, 3.0 RPG, 4.0 APG).

Wayland-Cohocton — Jamie Carman 6-foot Sr. F (10.1 PPG, 6.0 RPG); DeAndre Green 6-foot Sr. F 14. PPG, 9.5 RPG; Cameron Huber 6-foot-1-inch Sr. F (13.6 PPG, 6.0 RPG, 4.0 APG).

History 101: Avon is looking to win its seventh sectional title and first since claiming the C1 crown in 2009. Avon lost in the C1 semis a year ago. The Braves last reached a final in 2013 when they fell to Mynderse in the C1 championship game. Wayland-Cohocton won the 2012 B2 championship, its second in program history. The Eagles are making their second straight appearance in the B2 finals.

What’s at stake: A spot in the NYS regional qualifier against the Geneva/Waterloo winner.
