ONEONTA, N.Y. — Host Hartwick outscored Nazareth 46-29 in the second half Sunday to erase a five-point halftime deficit as the Hawks defeated the Golden Flyers 71-60 in an Empire 8 women’s basketball game at Lambros Arena.
The disappointing defeat snapped a five-game Nazareth winning streak and dropped the Golden Flyers to 15-7 overall and 7-4 in Empire 8 action. Hartwick defeated the Golden Flyers for the second time this season and improved to 12-10 overall and 6-5 in the E8.
Rachel Benedict (Brockport) posted her 12th double-double of the season as she combined 13 points with 12 rebounds, but she went 0-for-4 from three-point range and Nazareth went just 2-for-18 as a team from beyond the three-point arc. Jadyn Abrams added 12 points for the Golden Flyers.
Nazareth had leads of 11-8 after one quarter and 31-25 at halftime and were up by as many as 11 points late in the second quarter. Hartwick, however, stormed back in the third quarter by outscoring Nazareth 22-10 and the Golden Flyers couldn’t recover. The Hawks became sharp shooters in the second half as they hit 13 of 24 shots over the final 20 minutes, including 6-of-9 from three-point range. In addition, the Hawks went 14-for-15 from the free throw line.
Nazareth was still within striking distance heading in to the fourth quarter as the Hawks led 47-41. The lead expanded to 10 points with six minutes left, but Nazareth was ale to close within four points, 61-57, on a basket by Abrams with 2:45 left. The Hawks pulled away again as Mary Schoenherr knocked down all six of her free throw attempts ad finished with a game-high 21 points.
