A second half surge by the Rochester men’s team resulted in a 78-62 victory over Carnegie Mellon University on Sunday afternoon at the Louis Alexander Palestra.
Rochester advances to 12-4, 3-2 UAA on the season, while CMU drops to 8-8, 1-4 UAA.
A double-double by junior Ryan Algier (Fairport) resulted in 16 points and 17 rebounds during Sunday’s contest. It marked Algier’s third double-double of the season.
Sophomore Brian Amabilino Perez shined on both sides of the court in the first half, totaling 10 points and three rebounds to go along with three steals and one block. He finished the game with 17 points, six rebounds, three blocks and three steals.
The Yellowjackets fell victim to an early 7-0 deficit, but managed to climb back and take their first lead with 12:30 remaining in the first half. Amabilino Perez totaled seven points and two rebounds during that stretch.
CMU managed to keep the game close in the first half, forcing six turnovers in the first 11 minutes of action.
By halftime, Rochester held onto a 32-30 lead.
An opening 10-2 run in the second half by the Yellowjackets resulted in holding CMU to shoot 16.7% from the field during that stretch.
Junior Kailan Lee caught fire in the second half, adding 10 points on 3-of-4 from the field during the first seven minutes of action. He ended the game with 18 points on 7-of-10 from the field.
The Yellowjackets managed to end the game on a 21-9 run to seal the victory.
Rochester finished the game 30-of-60 (50%) from the field and grabbed 45 boards.
Next up, Rochester will travel to take on Washington University in St Louis on Friday. CMU is on the road to play New York University on the same day.
