William Smith falls short to Vassar for second conference loss

GENEVA, N.Y. — William Smith College sophomore Olivia Parisi netted a season-high 24 points and grabbed 10 boards, but Vassar defeated the Herons 78-67 in Liberty League action. The Brewers improve to 9-4 on the season and 5-1 in league play. William Smith falls to 8-5 this season and 4-2 in conference play.

Parisi made 11-of-23 shot from the floor and was 2-for-2 from the free throw line. She also dished out one assist and blocked one shot. Junior Stavriana Dimitrakopoulou joined Parisi in double digits with 17 points, and made a team high of three 3-pointers. Dimitrakopoulou also grabbed 8 rebounds.

Vassar had five players score in double digits and was led by Ryan DeOrio’s 20 points. Isa Peczuh added 18, and three more players added ten each. Sophie Nick grabbed 7 rebounds for the Brewers.

Vassar shot 48% from the floor while limiting the Herons to 35%. The Brewers broke away in the second quarter with a 20-13 run. Ryan DeOrio led the Brewers in the first half with 11 points. Senior Annaliese Schreder gave the Herons an early lead 3-2 when she sank a 3-point shot 30 seconds into the first quarter. William Smith kept the first quarter close, trailing 20-17 at the end.

The Brewers had their largest lead of 19 when Peczuh netted two free throws four minutes into the fourth quarter. The Herons edged Vassar 23-21 in points in the fourth quarter, cutting the Brewers’ lead to 11 points to end the game. Dimitrakopoulou netted 10 points for William Smith in the final quarter.

The Herons outshot the Brewers 38-26 in the paint and also edged Vassar 43-39 in rebounds.

William Smith will return to Bristol Gym tomorrow, Saturday Jan. 18 when they welcome Rensselear. Tipoff is at 2 p.m.
