GENEVA, N.Y. — Hobart College senior Edens Fleurizard scored a season-high 16 points and grabbed another season-high 14 rebounds to defeat Vassar 78-67 tonight.
Fleurizard was 8-of-9 shooting from the floor and 11 of his rebounds were defensive. Hobart finished with a 46-27 advantage in rebounds. Sophomore Dan Masino (Fairport) led the Statesmen with 18 points, making four 3-pointers and all four of his free throws. First-year Daniel Cook (Pittsford Mendon) and sophomore Jackson Meshanic also scored in double figures, recording 15 and 12 points respectively. Cook and Meshanic both grabbed nine rebounds.
Josh Brownridge led Vassar with 15 points and shared a team-high of five rebounds with Zach Bromfield. Kevin McAuliffe added 13 points and three 3-pointers. The Statesmen shot 45% from the floor, holding the Brewers to 43%.
In the first half, Vassar (6-7, 2-4) had the largest lead of 8 five minutes into the game. The Statesmen (12-2, 6-1) gained momentum when Fleurizard stole the ball and first-year Andrew Lynch made a 3-point shot to tie the game 16-16. Hobart was able to end the half with a 35-31 lead. Masino led the Statesmen with nine points in the half, and Hobart shot 50% from the 3-point line.
The Statesmen continued to pull away from the Brewers in the second half. Fleurizard made a layup, and Cook scored two more points in the paint one minute into the half. Vassar tried to rally back, cutting Hobart’s lead to just three points when McAuliffe made two free throws one minute and a half later. The Statesmen held off the Brewers and Meshanic had two successful free throw attempts to give Hobart their largest lead of 16 points with six minutes left in the half.
Hobart will return to Bristol Gym tomorrow, Saturday, Jan. 18 when it hosts Rensselaer. Tipoff is at 4 p.m.
