ALBANY, N.Y. — Visiting Nazareth outscored Sage 48-31 over the final 20 minutes Friday to pull away for an 83-63 men’s basketball victory over the Gators in Empire 8 Conference action.
Junior Stephen Gabel (Fairport) recorded his fourth double-double of the season as he combined a game-high 22 points with 10 rebounds and junior Kevin Underwood scored 17 of his 20 points in the second half as Nazareth improved to 10-4 overall and 2-1 in E8 action. Sage dropped to 9-6 overall and 2-2 in conference games.
Sophomore Jonathan Park also had a double-double for the Golden Flyers with 10 points and 11 rebounds (plus four blocks) and sophomore Zach Stenglein (Irondequoit) had 11 points and six assists with just one turnover.
Gabel scored 18 of his points in the first half as Nazareth led 35-32. Sage stayed close in the second half and was still within three points, 54-51, following a basket by Deonte Sherwood with 11:55 to go. Nazareth then embarked on a 20-4 scoring spree that spanned six minutes and ended with the Golden Flyers on top 74-55 with 5:17 left. Underwood scored to start the run and added two more baskets and a free throw. Stenglein and freshman Kobe Bogart each nailed three-point shots and Park had two baskets.
The lead swelled to 20 points, 79-59, on a three-pointer by Isaac Nelson with 3:00 left. Underwood added two more free throws to extend the lead to a game-high 22 points with less than two minutes to play.
Bogart finished with eight points and grabbed seven rebounds for the Golden Flyers, who made 18-of-28 field goal attempts (64.3%) in the second half and went 32-for-60 (53.3%) overall.
The Golden Flyers play again Saturday at Utica at 2 p.m. St. John Fisher downed Utica, 90-80, on Friday.
